Welcome to muzzleloading; Deerslayer1983. First of all, its like buying a car. Buy what fills your needs, budget, and what you like best. Do you want to shot traditional(flint/purcussion cap), in-line, or break-over. What are you planning to hunt(CAL). What kind of terrain are you hunting(weight). Are you mounting a scope or shoting iron sights. CVA & Traditions both make great guns that easy on wallet. Knight rifles or Thompson Center are also great choices. Heck, Browning & Remington are now making muzzleloaders. Your best bet is go to gun shop and check out the different models(Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain) their sales staff will point you in the right direction. Check out articles in Magazines(NRA, North American Hunter, North American Whitetail, ect.)Bottom line is everyone will tell you what they think is the best. But ultimitly' you'll be the one putting out the cash and pulling the trigger. I own a percussion CVA "Hawkens", percussion Thompson Center "Hawkens", Knight 209 "Disc" rifle, CVA inline "Eclipse", & Traditions "Pursuit" and like cars; they all have good & bad points. Good luck an Great Hunting!!!!

I usually don't take shots over 125 yards with my muzzle loader I think that it just loses to much energy past that point for an ethical kill...as opposed to my rifles with certain ones I have taken practice shots out to 300 yards
