First time trail cam user

Postby BackstrapAssassin » Mon Nov 29, 2010 10:00 pm

I'm going to be buying a trail cam for the first time in the near future. I currently hunt about 150 acres in Harrison County, Ohio with no cams set up and just rely on time in the field to scout patterns.

My thinking was to set up the cam after I get it and then around August or September put corn and maybe mock scrape to attract some deer before rut. I will also be setting up the cam with a trophy rock to attract as well all year.

Is this a good start or any other advice from seasoned trail cam users?

Thanks

My suggestion is not put the camera watching over the bait (corn), as you will get hundreds of pictures of birds, racoons and other little critters feeding on the corn. Aim it at the rock or trails to the bait. Cuddy backs or moultrie cams are best for me.

I agree with Chris, you'll get 100's of pics of does and all kinds of wildlife placed over bait. Put the cam on a suspected trial of a big buck or a trail just off of the bait pile. A scrape works well once pre-rut hits.

If you ARE going to use the trail cam over a feeder or bait pile the Cuddy backs are good for that. Over a trial I use a Reconyx because of the super fast trigger and recovery speeds. Multiple picture bursts give you close to movie like pictures. Over a bait pile though, you'd have thousands of pictures to go through. It really depends on how you plan to use the camera.

The other decision is do you use an incandescent flash camera or an infrared camera? I found this article to be helpful for trail camera tips. http://www.trophyhuntingobsession.com/3 ... l-cameras/

Good luck and let us see any good pics you get.
