Fletching/ vane twist/spin....opinions?

Postby silvergts1998 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 4:44 pm

I am just curious how many of you shoot with your vanes/fletch with a twist to it? I recently picked up a fletching jig (Made by a german name company beginning with a B.) I have the option of going straight or put a twist to the feathers/vanes.

I tried this with 4" vanes and feathers. Holy smoke! I am grouping my arrows so close together with out really trying now. I am not exaggerating either. But my only concern is now my arrows make more of a whoosh! sound while flying.

So I guess spinning the arrow is a good thing, but am I losing speed and if so how much? Do you think the noise of the arrow will hinder me getting a deer if they hear it and take off? I maybe over worrying here, but I do have a fast PSE- Pro series bow (Xforce GX).

Opinions?

Anyone use the blazer vanes with a spin to them too? I haven't tried that yet.

You don't mention how much (twist/degrees of offset) you have your vanes set at, its likely the more offset you have set on the vanes the more sound will be created and it will definitely increase drag.

From what I understand if you are using a mechanical release you can get good arrow spin with the offset set as low as 2 degrees, finger released arrows tend to need more offset to be stable than mechanical released arrows.

You may also find that feathers are quieter than vanes and that some brand or types of vanes are quieter than others.

Commercialy produced arrows that you can buy at a Walmart, Cabelas, or other outdoor stores with vanes already installed tend to have an offset of between 2 to 5 degrees depending on the brand and type of arrow so that should give you an idea of what area you should stay inside.

All you are really looking to do is put just enough spin on an arrow to stabilize it and that will increase accuracy, you arent looking to make arrows to spin madly like a bullet from a rifled barrel so my adviice is to start at the low end of around 2 degrees.

Perhaps some others have some info also, I don't do my own vanes so i'm just giving info that i've picked up from the guy at my bow shop that does my arrows and from info i've read in the past.

Dude it's okay to say bitzenburg jst don't link to their forums. And as long as you aren't over 5 degrees of twist you're fine. Over that and the arrow spin slows the arrow waaaaayyyyyy down. Don't worry about deer hearing it. By the time they do it's too late.

If you are using Blazers, I would either straight fletch or use a 2* offset. They are to short to do more than 2*.
