Food Plots for Bucks...

Postby Al Barrs » Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:30 pm

During the rut in your area is the best time to hunt mature bucks. They often go without eating during the rut. They trail, chase and breed does and loose weight at all times day and night. I suggest you consider planting a good well fertilized nutritional food plots for does, or any deer for that matter, since they all eat the same things. The Whitetail deer is primarily a browser but will graze during the winter months when browse has been killed by frost. Properly plant food plots for your does and the bucks will come to the food plots searching for hot does. For larger antlers put out mineral blocks during the spring of the year when bucks are growing antlers. My experience has been that mineral and/or salt blocks or loose minerals and salt doesn't draw bucks during the hunting season or during the rut. Winter wheat works well and is inexpensive to buy. Commercial deer plot seed are great but expensive if you plan to plant a number of plots. We plant about 15 plots twice each year to keep the resident herd satisfied and at home... Good Luck!!!

One thing I found out is that it takes time. Just because you plant something and it looks good to you doesn't mean the deer are going to flock to it. I think a good bean or pea plot in the spring and wheats and oats in the fall are a good choice and economical. Be patient, they will come.
