Do you mean there are no open areas, and you are hunting in a heavily treed area?

Yes, you can do a food plot underneath trees, but you have to use the right technique and seed. I planted my plot right under a bunch of apple trees and it grew pretty good. The first thing to do is get some of the limbs thinned out to allow more light to reach the ground. Second, clear any brush and or weeds out of the area you want to plant. Be careful using chemicals such as ground bare or other herbicides, you can damage the trees that you spray around. Next, do a soil sample and have it tested so that you can fertilize properly and use the recommended lime to get the soil right. Now you can use a small tiller or an ATV disc to break up the soil. Pick the seed you use carefully, there are mixes out there made for "honey hole" plots that work well in shady areas. Spread your seeds and then rake them in with a hand rake and watch it grow. Good Luck!

It was called Secret Spot from Whitetail Institute. I did not use any fertilizer or lime last year, but will do that this year when I plant again to see how much of an improvement there is. The bag says to fertilize, but I didnt as it was only a test to see if it would even work. It did, so this year I will do it right.
