Dude, have you even got your stand built yet?

I usually plant a fall and winter plot consisting of wheat, oats, rye, austrian winter peas, rape seed and clover and never do any plowing. You can probably find a "seed blend" with fertilizer at your local feed store. I paid about $16 for a 50# bag that plants about 1 acre. Clear what you can but, getting to bare dirt is not neccessary but, the closer the better! Just broadcast the seeds before a rain and let her rip! It's a little early and dry right now. I would wait to the end of August or the beginning of September! Oh, and yes, I would add a few salt blocks to tha grocery list and get them out just as fast as I could!

All of the seeds mentioned above are annual except for the clover. You should get between 4 to 6 years out of that. More that likely, it will be red clover but, some feed stores have it mixed. I have been checking into purple prarie clover but, have never planted it yet. It has a higher nutrional value than red and white. The rape seed and austrian winter peas tops the list in the mix for nutrional value with the oats coming in a close 3rd. However, I had a problem with the wheat choking out some of the daylight on the rest of the plants, especially the austrian peas and rape. I may omit the wheat this year, if possible!?!

Good Luck!

all ya gotta do is!

Man don't ya just hate to hear those words, Be very wary of anyone who uses the term,(all ya gotta do is) and ( This ain't no lie), But if ya can find any spots that get moderate to full sun ya need to get there in late august and early sept. and kinda rake around a few spots and scatter the heck out of some winter wheat as soon as the rains hit it it'll start growin within a week and it's very low maintenance, It'll grow on rocky soil it'll grow on top of the leaves even. Your best investment right now will probably be with corn feeders, simple homemade pvc pipe will do, and most definitely get several salt blocks out nothing fancy just white salt blocks, your deer will find em real quick and keep coming back. I was talking with a fella today and he said his feeders are being emptied every 3 days and he just replaced all his saltblocks for the second time this summer.

The deer here really seem to love the leaves off the rapeseed and the oats, also! Yea, they need alot of sun light but, in a cutover, you should have plenty! Deer usually bed in cutovers during the day here so, you should have a really good spot! Did ya find you some of that chicken litter yet?
