When you read the box, you should see 3-9x or 4-16x or just 4x. That is the magnification of the scope. The last number is the objective size. The bier the objective, the more light that is let in for lower light usage. If you own a scope and it has 3-9x40 on it, the object(deer, target) you are viewing will be 3 to 9 times closer than with the normal eye and the objective opening will be 40mm. I have a scope that is 1.25-4x20. The target will appear 1.25 to 4 times closer(zoom) with a 20mm opening in the objective. The scope tube(body) is 30mm instead of 1" like the majority of scopes are.
