ghillie suits

Postby bigbuck71 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 8:16 pm

I've been contemplating a ghillie suit for this upcoming season . Has anyone ever used them and are they really worth it?

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt but a deer will typically smell you before it will see you anyway; unless you are blatantly waving your arms. I find that having a good background while wearing just about any breakup pattern is easier than dressing up like a tree. Ghillie suits work better on humans.

I bought one for this deer season, will be hunting at edge of old growth next to 5 yr old clearcut. Think it will help camo me better. Will post results.

If it doesn't work try drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette while wearing jeans and a red flannel shirt. My grandpa used to hunt like this and had better success than those who wore all cammo and covered their scent.

I hunted out of an open grassy field last year. No stand,..just off the ground.

I made a ghille suit out of an old set of bdu's ,..cut slits in them and wove grass and vines and all sorts of the vegetation from the actual field I was hunting into the holes. I looked like a big frigging swamp monster walking around,..but once I laid down,....totally gone from view.

My other post in the Louisiana section has a pic of the buck I shot while wearing it.

One thing though,.....if you smoke like me,...mind you the grass gets really dry,.....fire hazzard,....lol

also I had to use some green & grey spray paint after a week or so to get the colors back right....and then used doe pee to mask the smell.

If you can't make a blind or a stand,..I'd say go for it,....but I'd still rather hunt from a stand. Safer too.
