Gonna try a bow this year

Postby Tenpoint » Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:30 pm

Hi folks,

I'm going to try bow hunting this year for the firt time. The thing is...I will be hunting with a crossbow. I know we have some folks who look poorly upon cross bows, but a new bow is just not in the budget for me for the forseeable future, and I have a friend that will lend me his Excaliber. He is new to hunting so, I'm looking for tips from our bow users here.

There has been some discussion on which broad heads to use, and I was wondering if those comments apply to crossbow bolts as well. Any other tips you can give me would be appreciated. I am a successful gun hunter, just looking for things to consider when using the crossbow. I'm going to get out and practivce a few times prior to the season.

I don't know if any of you recall that picture I posted of the shed I found this winter, with the base nearly as thick as a coke can, and seven tines on one side, but that buck is the reason I'll be using the crossbow this year..no gun hunts there. Here's the link...

Dude, if you bring that up one more time I am moving in with you. Wife and kids are coming as well. :D

As for your broadheads, I'm not much of a cross bow hunter but I would imagine you would want to go with a mechanical rather than a fixed blade. I think the extreme speeds of a cross bow would make a fixed blade plane off and throw off your bolts. Good luck dude, I hope you get that big boy.

Kwack dude, that the first time I brough it up since I first posted it. Someone has a little buck envy. Don't you have racks like that down in Georgia? You are welcome to come up and hunt that bad boy yourself. I'd put you and the Kwack family up for a spell. The only problem is that there is no open season for non-residents in that area.

Thanks for the tips on the broadheads.

Cheers,

No we don't have racks like that down here. And bringing it up again is enough to push me over the edge, especially with Kansas on the brain. Buck envy? yes, yes I do have it and I'm not afraid to say it. As far as being a non resident, I could claim I was from Southern Ontario, waaaaay south. :D
