Good Deer Hunting Hound

Postby adam14 » Mon Nov 22, 2010 8:59 pm

Hello, I have a problem that i think a more experienced hunter than i could answer. I need to know a good purebred dog breed i could use for deer hunting. My standards are slightly different than most, i need a dog that would stay silent by my side, but if i don't down it with the first shot, it could track the scent trail. I live in Kansas, and this will probably be where i hunt most often so i have a reason not to need to have active hunting dogs, because of the flat landscape, and short brush. All ideas are welcome.

Thank You

First you will need to check with the Kansas DNR to see what their rules and regulations are about using dogs to track wounded/dead deer. Some states allow it and some don't. Most that allow it, make certain rules to follow. Tennessee, where I live, states that the dog has to be on a leash at all times, no hunting implement can be with the hunter/tracker and you must let the TWRA know where you will be and what you are doing with the dog. You also cannot have the dog with you while hunting. It will either need to be at your vehicle or at home, until needed. I also dont believe that you will need a pure bred dog to track deer. Any dog can do it with the proper training and you can save a little money by using a "run of the mill mutt".
