good kill

Postby new hunter » Sat Nov 01, 2008 6:20 am

I just wanted to post that i harvested my first deer last night. It's been a long journey for me to get that first one,and i did it with my bow.He was a nice seven point buck.He wasn't a monster but for my first one i am excited.Got in the woods after work around 4:30-5:00 pm and set up.About 20 minutes later a couple yearlings come walking through.Watched them for a little while you know body language, where they came from, where they were going etc...then came along a nice big mature doe.Waited what felt like forever for her to get close enough and clear of the shrubs, undergrowth to get a clean shot.Pulled back my bow set my pin on her and let it go...Missed right over her back.Oh forgot to tell you i just got my bow back from the shop because i had a mis-hap at the range a couple of weeks ago.I accidentally dry fired my bow and blew the limbs apart and broke my string.Okay back to the hunt after the miss shot she spun around and ran about 10 or 20 yards. No sooner that i relized i missed i saw a monster buck chase right behind her.He was on my left and she was on my right i never saw him until he chased after her.Okay so i was a little mad at myself but,5 minutes later here they come again back my way.The only thing though the never get into range and head out into the field they're gone. Now here comes a nother couple of does i let them walk by because just not quite a good shot at them. Now here comes my deer.I spotted him,I waited for a good shot and in range. When he cleared everything turned broadside i pulled back my bow put my pin on his shoulder and let it fly.....BAMM nice hit.He jumped and tried to run but went face first in the ground back legs pushing him through the leaf litter like a bulldozer. All though he did manage to run about 20 25 yards afterwards. When recovered it was noted by a friend that my arrow blew through his front shoulder and out his chest in front of the other shoulder.A good clean kill..MY FIRST DEER EVER...and I DID IT WITH MY BOW..... :D I will post a pic soon... :D

Congrats. Glad that you got one under your belt. Nothing like taking a deer with your bow.

Thanks Kwack and thanks Doc.It's really nice to get that first deer.Something I know I will never forget.I have put in alot of work the last two years to get the first one.Made alot of mistakes and learned alot.I still have alot to learn and I am sure I will still make mistakes. How's that saying go "A bad day in the woods is always better than, a good day at work." With that said I can't wait to harvest another deer.I know people are maybe thinking why I killed such a small buck. You know deer mangement. To them they have to understand this was my very first deer ever and it was with a bow. That's the only weapon I use nothing else. Now that I have my first, I am aiming to be very select on the buck's that I harvest in the future. As for the doe's....does size matter?

Great job and story Small buck oh well don't worry about what others think like you said its your 1st deer and a buck :D My newphew shot his first buck Sat. his first also from a tree stand. Delaware youth day so he had a gun to use but man he was totally pumped like you were. The ground under his stand look like the city dump as he dropped just about everything after he shot.

Okay, with that said Kwack. It was Steve,Ed and Steve at OCEAN PRO OUTFITTERS in Smyrna,DE.Best bunch of guys to get you pointed in the right direction. They have been so helpfull with helping me and my needs. As far as equipment choices, suggesions on set-up and helping me tune my bow for best accuracy.Don't forget that they also re-built my bow after my disaster at the range. When I did something so stupid. That caused my bow to explode and leave a nasty reminder on my lefthand. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. I owe them guys big time, and I have told them several times.I can't thank 'em enough..... ....THANKS GUYS AT OCEAN PRO OUTFITTERS.....

What a great story man!!!!! Let me tell you somthing man. You shoot whatever your heart desires. I love to hunt rfor big bucks but i also love to let the arrow fly and smash the doe's. I feel that every deer you harvest with a bow is a trophy. Thats a great deer. You have plenty of years of good bowhunting to get that monster. I am sure you wont be quiting anytime soon.

Thanks bambeklr, I think your right.I am a hunting addict now.I was bitten by the bug the end of last year. Now with my first kill i am a full blown addict. My wife nags me from time to time about how much time i spend in the woods.Well she's just gonna have to get over it ,lol.I don't think it's that much time just one day a week after work and saturdays.Sometimes three days a week.Would like it to be six days but,you know i have to work to pay bills.

i been a gun hunter all of my short life and seen and harvested many game animals. my uncle finaly convinced me to try out a bow.. now ive had a jennings unitech single cam for a long time that i just shot in the yard. i bought some new arrows a new string and went all out. my first day in the woods i jumped a buck on my way out in a peice both me and my father each took a spike out of last year. my second day i missed a big doe at 35 yards in a field. she jumped my string. so now i know i can see more deer with a bow so im getting more and more into it every second. my third day out i had ANOTHER deer jump my string. i went out and bought a limbsaver stabilizer, vibration dampers, and the cat wiskers. i saw 19 deer in 9 days. my 10 day every bow hunting my uncle missed a deer at the top of a hill and i was at teh bottom. 8 deer ran rite at me and were everywhere. i got one to stop 15 feet from me. he dropped where he was standing. now for my first bow deer i didnt care he was 64 pounds. you all can make fun of that. im a meet hunter more then a rack hunter. 2 weeks later i harvested yet another deer wich was 133 pounds and 5 points. i am truly ADDICTED.
