Not necessarily. Smoothbore barrels will shoot foster style slugs safely but they are limited in their range. Basic sighting system helps. Most are 50 yard guns, rare ones you can push the slug 75-100yds. Aftermarket rifled barrel or a smoothbore(Imp. Cyl. usualy) with rifle sights will increase your range and versatility. Best set up is a rifled barrel with a scope but for a Remington they get pricey.

With a rifled barrel you dont have to shoot sabots. Foster style work good and their accuracy is increased ALOT by the rifled barrel. I shoot Brenneke K.O.'s in my Winchester 12ga and Mossberg 20ga and both have fully rifled barrels. The 12ga is a bonafide 100yard+ deer gun and it will shoot "a little further" then the 20ga and the 20ga has taken deer to 100+ yards. 12gs K.O.'s $3.79 or so, 20ga I just bought 10 more box's for around $5ea. Some of the Copper Solid's, Buckhammers etc are only $7-$12/bx. I'd consider a smoothbore with rifle sights minimum. We dont allow beaded only shotguns in our deer camps or lease's. We keep several "loaner" guns just for that reason. The bead just isnt good enough to get clean one shot kills consistently. They will work but theres always that one deer/hog you hold the gun a little "off" from where you have before and then your tracking a gutshot deer/hog. Good Luck, shotgun slugs are deadly within their range and limitations.
