Good strategy

Postby 8pointsncounting » Thu Nov 17, 2011 6:03 pm

Hi, I am Paul from N.C- I have sat and thought of all the times I have taken deer- what the weather was like- where my stand was-wind, so I decided to keep a hunting journal, now I am a mans man, but when i was an alchohol funny car crew chief we used to note every little detail and change in a RUN BOOK- so we could go back and refrence it- well I am not the guy who goes in the woods and comes out with a deer and a horse shoe in my hand. I have to work at it, and I have found that by writing down what the weather is, wind, where I am hunting- draw out a map of your hunt- it does help- I wanted to take deer 12 years ago- no luck after 2 years- so i asked a deer vet to scout with me- and teach me, the results? A 220 # 8 pointer right here in rowan co, and about 15 others- my advice is- ask, and reason and try- it works- but take note- REAL NOTES-

Going out with a vet is always a good idea to learn the basics from the beginning. So is keeping a journal. I wish I would have started one as a kid. But after a while you just come to learn what deer will do in many different situations. Basically you have to be where the deer are first and foremost. Then you scout, pattern them, learn their habits. Know where they are when it's warm and what they do when a cold front comes.
It's always a learning game, and that's the best part about it.

Well, I have a piece of private land i hunt, someone cut over the adjacent property on two sides and all i have seen is 2 does this year- I normally only shoot big deer here- but all bets are off and now if it's brown it's down- LOL. I guess the deer moved on for the most part, because I have spent hours in the stand at my usual locations where year after year I have watched deer cross over and I have targeted narrow thickets and pinch points and bottle necks- this year is diffrent- too quiet for me- I need meat! So off to game land I go- after one last try- I always hunt the edges of gameland where it boarders private land, and get there at like 4am- to be st up by 5am in the tree- Things do change; after reviewing my notes I see where after the cuttover was done- way less deer have been in view- geing to get in the thick
