Ground blind placement

Postby mkeleher » Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:15 pm

Is it best to set up a camo ground blind up looking over a field in a corner? Or put it way back in the thick timber. Im considering trying out the ground blind this year for whitetail. I originally bought it for turkey season but would like to use it for whitetail as well. any suggestions?

Depends entirely on wind. Depending on how spooked the deer are will determine how much other cover you need. If they have not been shot at lately (opening day) you can often get away with sitting it right out in the open field.

You have to consider wind direction, where the deer are coming from and what time of day the deer are expected to be there. Come up with a plan to get into your blind undetected before the deer move into that area.

In most cases, ground blinds (even stick blinds) seem to need some sort of added or extra cover to be effective. They also seem to require time for all the local wildlife to get used to seeing them there, and this holds especially true for deer. You can get away with a lot more in the woods than you ever will out in the open, that's for sure. Deer will notice any little thing that is out of place. This has been my personal experience anyway and I've been a hunter for 45 years and guiding now (deer, bear, turkey) for about 35 years. -Runner
