Grunt calls

Postby Tenpoint » Thu Oct 30, 2008 6:40 pm

HI Everyone,

I usually just keep quiet when deer hunting, but this year I may try a bit of calling during the rut. Does anyone have any good tips for a grunt call? I'm looking for frequency and duration of calls in a sequence, and also how long between calls.

If anyone has any good audio they could post, that would be great.

Cheers,
Tenpoint

A few years back I tried it while I was hunting after a week of not seeing many deer. I bought a call from knight and hale with a dvd. I watched it....after watching I was kinda surprised cause what they were saying was a little confusing to me. They were explaining deer body language and how it realted to the different kinda calls and grunts you should be doing. Well, they had deer doing things on that video I had never seen before, but I gave them the benefit figuring they are deer experts. So until I actually see deer acting the way they did in the video I think my calls will stay in my bag.
I have however heard deer call before. There was one year where I was going through a swamp and I could hear lots of noise I stopped for a while to see or hear. All of a sudden to my left I heard this deep gutteral grunt. It kinda freaked me out. There he stood a big buck looking in the same direction I was. He then bolted forward towards where all the noise was. I moved a little closer in towards the noise (15ft or so). Then I heard more grunting. Then I saw 3 nice sized bucks chasing each other around....damn the season was over 3 days ago. I watched them for about 10 mins then they moved on. But I heard for the first time a series of grunts. I have never seen this again nor any deer behaving that way.

i have and like to use mad game calls by mark and terry drury. Comes with a dvd that shows you how to use the call and mark does a good job explaining everything.

You could try youtube and search under deer grunt or wheeze. I tried to find a link labeled as such the other day but tube was slow. You could also go to a store that has electronic deer calls or to a website of a manufacturer to possibly hear samples. I checked on an electronic call at Fleet Farm where ya just push a button for differing grunts, bleats, etc...might help ya. Be careful of disobeying laws concerning the electronic calls- not everywhere allows them.

I have a website that you can purchase these deer calls from as well as related equipment. In the rut deer are very vocal in my experience. With some instruction and the right calls, you can increase your odds of bagging that trophy buck in your area.
