Guess the score!!

For those of us who like to shoot with a camera.

Guess the score!!

Postby fire_boy92 » Sat Aug 02, 2008 1:51 pm

I have these pictures from my game camera just north of Houston TX. It is placed in a heavily populated area but i was amazed at the size of these deer. Anyone out there that scores a lot want to take a guess on these guys. there are 4 buck that come to the camera almost daily. Here are the bigger 2...

They even smile for the camera!

It's really hard to judge them when they are in velvet and they don't have a full winter coat on but here's my guess.

First deer - Age - tough call because you can't see the body just the face, I'm guessing 3 years maybe four. It'll score between 125 and 135.

Second Deer - Age I would say at least four years, but again, that's a tough call without seeimg his profile. Score 140-145. The velvet really throws off a decent guess at the mass of that deer though.

First deer i dont think is older than3.my guess on the score is125-130.
Second deer is at least 3 years old maybe four.I still only guess his score at 130.I know Hes much wider but he dosent have the length.Im not normally big on the score thing. But the other day i decided to look up the rules on scoring and scored my mounts.Boy was i suprised.I think those guys on tv lie a lot because going buy what they guess thier bucks at i always figured mine to be around 125-130.Neither of them scored over 118.You can take a look at them in the taxidermy forum under my mounts and tell me what you think.

Those are both young deer, probably 3. Their necks barely get to their jaw bones and their faces are very thin. They both need another year or two before they are mature bucks. Nice racksonboth of them though.

I think both are 4.5 years old.

Both are 130-135ish. The 10pt may go a little more, but it is hard to tell. Once the velvet is off, it will make them look totally different.

hoping to catch them rubbing their velvet off in the next week or two. A buddy about an hour from here has buck rubbing theirs off on his place. Should make some cool pictures if I catch them part way through rubbing it clean. I will put some more corn out for them tomorrow and then check the camera again in a few days.

The big question is who here would let either of those two big boys walk.Everybody has thier own line drawn on what is qdm and whats not.Im not exactly the brown its down kinda guy but i would definatley not think twice on either of them.Even though they do still have a little more potential. One quick glance at those racks and there would be no need for counting points. The rest of the time all eyes would be focused behind the shoulder.

They could both go one more year if a hunter was seriously into QDM, but they would be dead if they walked in front of me.

On a side note, I was looking for a copy of Trophy Score but didnt find one. It lets you score the deer via trail cam pics. Gets you within a few inches of the actual score. Keep in mind that if you were to score these bucks in velvet, the score will vary once in hard antler. Take a look at it Trophy Score Demo movie

These guys are pretty protected and maybe next year i can track them down again. Wouldnt that be something to catch them 2 yrs in a row and compare the pictures then? There are two large lakes contained in this community and a creek running from one to the other. the bottom lake is so populated it doesnt allow them to escape to the lower creek. I know deer can just walk down streets but their habitat is like an island and it has everything they need, and no pressures really. Im going to try and keep tabs on these guys for a while.

More pictures to come when that velvet starts coming off!

Another year or two would turn these two into seriously mature, huge deer. I would kill either of them without thinking twice though.

I've got to say that the tenpoint is really impressive but I am in awe of how dadgum tall that eight point is. Those G-2's are well over 12" long. And he's got mass to with it. Super super nice.

Im seriously tempted about that trophy score software doc mentioned. $50 for unlimited scores. I think i would have a lot of fun with it though. Anyone out there used it?

Im headed out to the farm I hunt this weekend. going to do some final prep work around the stand and maybe shoot a pig. Anyone have any ideas on cutting down the raccoon population thats eating all our corn? I think im going to bring my little brothers .22 and take some of them out.

I will take some pics around my tripod and post them on a new thread next week.

That middle picture of the eight point just amazes me. That may be the symmetrical deer I have ever seen. Big mass, long times and huge sweeping main beams. What a buck. I would take him over the tenpoint every time. Great pics man. I know you can't hunt here but you need to slide in there after they shed their antlers and see if you can't find those.

Thanks for the comments guys, Shed hunting is a definite... there arent any no trespassing signs or anything, every once in a while i see someone else walking down there. There are birdhouses on the trees every so often too so i guess people bird watch. More pics when that 10 sheds its velvet.

Angle it over your shoulder and buy the tape from the security guards. You could start your own show, call it "Urban Whitetail Adventures" or something catchy like that. I'd watch. :D

I say you try the ground blind approach..something with black asphalt camo and a white or yellow stripe of your choice :D
Then you wouldnt have to climb around the sec cams.
