Hair off Hide Tanning project

Postby Brow Tine » Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:37 am

I’m getting ready to start a hair off hide tanning project as I need some leather for some knife sheaths and hatchet holster.
Anyone ever tried the hair off?
I have done several hair on hides before with good success. These are whitetails hides.

usually to remove hair on the skin, soak it in warm water for a couple of
days and that should remove it. the bacteria will take care of that.
then remove, drain skin put in towels soak up water and completely salt
the skin.
next day shake of salt and resalt skin same way.
when fairly dry, make a pickle for it soak it in that at a ph of around 3.5 to 4 for a couple of days.
then put in baking soda to neutralize the acid from pickle.
then brush or put in tanning solution to complete tanning.
hope this helps u out.

Cool...,

I'm planning to do the same thing...except make a buckskin shirt and leggings. I made a set once before, but used deer tanned cowhide...not as soft as deer hide.

Looks good,
