help a mom help her son get a deer

Postby redmoonjade » Thu Nov 25, 2010 7:09 pm

hi all, ok here is my dilema I am a mom of a 14 year old I have taken my hunter saftey, and bow and have had my hunting liscence for two years... problem I only took those courses to do them with my son outside of 3d courses I have not and probably could not kill somthing, this is his first year of hunting big game and my husband who was so excited and proud to take his son deer hunting for his first time had to have an emergency apendectomy both were upset about missing this father son thing I have been sitting with him while he hunts and I am praying he gets a deer.
Question he had a six point come in on him from his blind side and the deer knew he was there and ran now my son took a shot as he was running away with a 233 and missed, he knows he shouldnt have but it happened that was 3 days ago we will leave the field alone for 4 days and we are the only ones hunting it (the field) will it get over the missed shot and come back to that field that was not the first or second time they have seen that same deer mostly out of range in bow so any advice .....

Yea, that deer will be back...and others. You'd be supprised just how many deer you guys have living in your area. Most of your bigger deer will only make that one mistake,so be ready! Good Luck & good for you ! You are a good mama!

First of all, I think it's great to see parents getting their kids involved in the sport of HUNTING!! Missing an animal is nothing to be worried about, we all have. Last year a client of mine shot and tagged a 10 point that was wounded the week before, so I am sure that six point will be back. With out the rut he might just be a little more carefull though before he shows himself. Good luck!!

redmoonjade, you had said that the buck knew you were there. Look at the field and find the trails that the deer are using the most to enter the field. The bucks will sometimes use the same trails as the does after the rut but i have found that they use a smaller trial that runs paralell with the main trials. Find these, and make sure that you set up downwind of those trials. Make sure that you and your son make no sudden movments too. I was told that it should take almost 15 seconds to turn your head if you are sitting on the ground. Deer have a hard time seeing you if you are still, but a sudden movment can be picked up very easily. Good luck and i hope this helps. your son is lucky.. i never could get my dad out of bed to go. Enjoy the time with him.

Are you and your son both wearing scent free camo washed with scent eliminator detergent and then spraying down your clothes and boots with scent eliminator or scent cover before walking into the field? Other than changing stand locations to a different part of the path, you have to prevent them from knowing you are there. A lot of scent can be thrown around in an open field with swirling winds or even just the slightest breeze.

I am thrilled that you are taking time to fill in for Dad and I am sure you are enjoying it and hope you will continue to enjoy hunting and the outdoors.
I guess regarding hunting and a young person. Woodsmanship is the most important lessons to learn for the young hunter.
Sometime hard for young ones to do!
Being Still
Slow Deliberate Movement
Being Absolutely Quiet
Concealment Camo, Ground Blind or Tree Stand. Not being back lighted.
Another important fact is early in the shooting location. I have got me best deer right after legal sunrise and right around legal sun set in the evening.
And also what the guys have mentioned about Clothing and Sent Sprays. I also use Rabbit Sent on a Felt Sent Strip or Cotton Cloth to mask my sent! I also do a lot of coyote hunting also and they are a challenging adversary.
And of course set up downwind if at all possible as previously mentioned.
Good Luck and let us know how he does. Also teach him Shot Placement. That will be very critical with the 223 Rifle and or Bow.
