HELP PLEASE

Postby dradkins » Wed Jan 12, 2011 3:16 pm

First of all I am new to the board and new to muzzleloaders. My father and I have both bought guns this year and are not having much success with them. Father bought the CVA optium. He is shooting the copper powerbelts (245 grain) with 100 grain 777 and winchester 209 primers. His shots are all over the place and he is using a gun rest when shooting so not even touching the rifle. Also after everytime he cleans his gun he shoots 2 or 3 primers through it. But when he loads it up he gets 2 to 3 misfires after every clean. It goes off but the powder comes burning out the end of the barrel and the bullet does not go more than about 25 to 30 yards. After doing that 2 or 3 times then the gun will shoot everytime just not consistent.

I bought the tradition yukon (used) but only had been fired 5 times. Gentlemen went through divorce and needed money quick. I am shooting 100 grains 777 and 300 grain xtp hornday and i am nailing tacks at 50 and 75 yards. However I am having a really hard time (almost bent my rod) trying to load the bullet. Any suggestion for either one of us?

After cleaning the gun run an oil patch down the barrel. When your ready to shoot it run a couple of dry patches through the barrel to remove the oil and fire a couple of primers through it to slightly foul the barrel. If your having trouble loading after firing the primers, dry patch the barrel before loading. With the Traditions you may need to use Harvester Crushed Rib sabots (H15040BL).

When you clean the gun dont use oil down the barrel and use the grease sparingly. I use bore butter on my barrel after i clean it. Before i load it up i run 1 or 2 patches down the barrel to get the access out. One of my ML is a traditions and that works great for it. Also make sure before you load it to run a pipe cleaner through the hole where the spark from the primer goes out
