hog trap

Postby CRO » Mon Jun 20, 2005 7:13 am

i just built a hog trap for the first time and i was wondering what you guys think of the idea. i am using a fence material that has a 4x4 inch squares and the trap is 5 ft tall 5ft wide and is 8 feet long. it has a trap door that falls when a trip wire is triggered but the door falls with a weight on it. the next hog can enter by pushing the door up with its nose so what do you guys think of the idea? i am putting it out this weekend but no setting it for a few weeks so i will try to get some pictures next week to show you guys.

Shucks, That thing should be baited! once the catchin' slows a bit it is time to leave it pinned open with sourcorn to just feed the fear out of them. Other wise I can say your trap sounds good as long as you are confident that a gorilla can't break it! The hogs are VERY destructive if they choose to be! Good luck Trappin' them. brent

I suggest trying, on your next one, this idea. It is made of 2 panels of hog panel (holds piglets too) or cattle panel. It is a repeat catch setup in that the door does not prevent entry, only exit. It is supported by t-posts. It will cost around $100.00 give or take. Here is a link showing the door. the rest is simply placing posts and wiring the panel to the post in a circular shape. It is the second pic down. Brent

I forgot to point out... Except as shown in pics regarding door, tposts MUST go OUTSIDE or it will get bulldozed  The longer the deeper the post (it is worth getting a driver at feed store or tractor supply) the better. My bait recipe WARNING:::NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLACE A LID TIGHTLY ON THIS BREW>>>>IT WILL BLOW UP!!! is 1-2 envelopes of brewers/bakers yeast to 3/4 bucket of corn cup of sugar or mollasses based on cost and add water to 3-4 inches above corn and add some if it soaks down to far. It begins to odor in 2-4 hours in the sun and is sour corn in 24-28 hours but this stuff is KICKING at 4-7 days. I have been using whole corn and am thinking of switching to mostly crushed as I feel the coons wont nail it ALL! I spread a few hand fulls around the trap out to 15 feet into the area directly near it as I hope to slow the coons from removing it all and also to "get the hog's head down" I feel it dulls their natural fears. I LOAD the "safe" area into a trap about the size you describe with up to 7-8 pounds poured over debris I place in the floor area to hide it from little critters a bit. Behind trigger is where you would place some diesel corn over some plain sour. The debris is grassy and lush not twiggy as i don't wan't snaps to spook them. I tie an old sock to ceiling. When you bait take enough corn and diesel corn i use only 2 pounds of diesel scent per trigger. If you use the circle trap, it probably won't matter so much. I save and use ALL my sour water! I use gatorade qt. jug cut off and to place or sling corn I drain it first. Then take the juice that is now way above the corn and get it and sling it into the trees and brush around the trap to make a large scent waft into the woods. Also pull the sock out and soak it good. Trickle a couple scoops of juice ALL OVER THE INSIDE OF THE TRAP. The scent needs to be a bit stronger there than the brush you scented. BTW don't hesitate to take fruit that is beyond eating to squash into bait brew! If no hogs in 7-14 days... Thie juice will LIGHT you UP! If you have coon roblems... save back some corn and pour a few ounces of diesel over it in a bucket and tightly lid it, roll it around a few times in a day or 2 and if a coon eats this...it is a hungry coon! I own a Redhawk (7.5'', stainless). Admittedly, the action isn't the slickest out of the box, but if you're like me, winding your own springs, and have a little experience with lapping compound and hones... you can make them rival even custom shop S&W 29's.

Ruger Redhawks are the way to go. The Super Redhawk is kind of pointless. My Redhawk has seen countless nearly-nuclear loads, and it locks up just as tight as it did the day I bought it. The Super Redhawk is only if you really, *really* want to put a *stellar* set of mounts and a good scope on it. The extended frame doesn't really influence strength... standard Redhawk frames are more than capable of handling *Nuclear* loadings.

Taurus Tracker: Forget it. Weak, and prone to problems. Taurus turnaround times on repairs are wayyy too long too... I haven't heard very many good things about these.

Taurus Raging Bull: See above. Can't take lukewarm loads.

S&W 629: Very slick, very pretty... very delicate. Stick with factory ammo, and don't run it too hard. Nice gun, pretty gun. That's about it. Very accurate.

Ruger Super Blackhawk: Very accurate, and along with it's counterparts the Redhawk and Super Redhawk: The definition of indestructible.
