How to draw?

Postby TheRookie » Wed Oct 22, 2008 2:37 pm

I've been sitting over a salt lick for 4 days, morning and evening. I've seen a lot of does, and a several small bucks, but nothing within range. Finally a decent 6 point walks right out of the woods and comes directly towards me, stops at the salt lick 15 yards away and turn broadside. He put his head down and I started to draw back, midway through my draw, he picks up his head and stares directly at me. I stopped mid draw and stayed as still as I could. Finally I couldn't hold the weight (I hadn't reached the let off point yet) and so I slowly let down the draw, as I did the deer bolted and ran into the woods.

This is all I have been able to think about since it happened. Should I have continued to draw back when the deer looked up at me? How do yall draw back so as not to spook the deer? Is this just an inevitable part of hunting, and if so how do I minimize spooking deer with my movement?

I'm still looking for my first bow kill and appreciate any and all advice.

do what your natural reaction is pull the sucker back and shoot the deer... continue your draw and fire before he goes to leave...

Can you get a bit higher up? How is your background? I like to put my stand in a location where there are trees to the sides of my shooting lanes so that when the deer is coming in, it will be behind the tree trunk for a moment before they get to the lane, that way I can draw on them out of their sight. It doesnt always work, but most of the time it does.

I dont stop drawing in the situation you are talking about, even if they do look. Ive tried to stop mid-draw and then wait a few seconds, but its extremely tough to get it to full draw once you stop. Most of the time, they will stick around long enough to get a shot at them, but sometimes they dont, and its all part of hunting.

Once he sees you you might as well finish what you started. This way he might do something stupid in a quick second and youll be ready for him.Like NY says i hang my stand the opposite way i think hell be so that i can hide behind the tree while drawing.Of course your not guranteed he will come from that way.Too bad its not like when i was bear hunting.I just waited for him to put his head in the bait barrel to draw.
