Hunting D15

Postby martinsonly » Mon Aug 03, 2009 5:08 pm

My son and I are hoping to fill deer tags in the Cleveland NF (Trabuco District) this year. Any veteran D15 hunters out there? Looking for any helpful info for the area and/or pics of D15 bucks.

Thanks all.

Hunting D15

This is one of the lowest success rates in the state. The terrain is tough; steep hills and thick brush. Game trails end into thick inpenetrable brush. Starts out cool in the morning and then hot in the afternoon. Need to pack plenty of water. If you get lucky enough to spot a deer, the shots are usually long. I have seen plenty when scouting the area, but have not filled my tag in this zone.

Hunted D15 the last two weekends of archery - deer are already skittish. Lots of mountain bikers and hikers on the trails and the few roads there are. Saw some tracks spooked a couple in the brush that I never did see. Tough sledding. I could of course fill a tag in Whiting Ranch any morning if that were open. Where its legal to hunt, its another story - scout my friend and do it harder than I did this summer. 12 deer for the zone last year out of 150 or so tags, and I think that includes deer killed on Catalina and/or Lake Perris State Park which is also D-15. Still, its cool to be in the woods hunting and home to do chores. Enjoy. I may see you up there - remember your D-15 tag is good in D11 and D13 as well. Of course D-11 is closed in the Angeles due to the Station Fire which makes my A-31 tag useless until it re-opens.
