Hunting with vintage arms and calibers

Postby federali » Sat Nov 26, 2005 4:50 pm

Most deer hunters will pass through a progression of deer rifles over their hunting career. Once you've taken a few deer with the very latest stainless synthetic, short fat magnum, did you ever want to hunt with a vintage caliber or rifle? For example, a Savage 99 in either .250 or .300 Savage or .358 Winchester, perhaps an old Model 94? Once in a while I enjoy laying aside my Model 7 and hunting with a Winchester 88 in .308. It's really not too vintage but the rifle hasn't been made for years.

I have a Remington 700 in .270 and a Winchester model 94 .30-30 that I have had since I was 11. I have used the .270 since rifle season opened on Nov. 19. I used my .30-30 today since I decided to hunt the woods. I guess I should say it depends on where I am hunting as to what rifle I take with me.
Curiosity killed the cat, but I was a suspect for a while......

Gave up those modern cartridges years ago. Not the least interested in these new ones they're coming up with.

Never liked the Newer calibers. Ill always stay true with the good ol 30-30 and .250sav, and you cant forget the .308 or 30-06 or the less comon but old school 45-70.
IF its brown its down. Thats only of course i have my trusty 30-30...
