I guess I need my DAD?

Postby bliner001 » Wed Jun 30, 2010 10:30 pm

oK. I'm 43. been hunting deer the last 5 years(no deer). My Dad took my brothers when they were younger. My age did. not wrok out right i guess. No big deal. My older bro was a big deer(bow) hunter utill desert storm, but no longer hunts. He has given me some good pointers, but still have not shot a deer.
Property is 90 acres 40% densely wooded. 2 feeders, 2 18 wheeler cab blinds and another spot that is in the dense brush where all the scrapes and rubs have been the last few years...on the other side of the property..I use scent bock, last year...comeerdeer (tasted pretty good), 30-30 dead on at 130.

Question is? what am I doing wrong? My cammo is not designer. AmI impatient or what. There are lots of deer out here. The rubs and scrapes are good but in such deep brush, hard to get to unless you are jet li. I usually go out 2-3 hours before sunrise. Anyone wanting to help out a dude please feel free.

my only guess could be that you are just in the right place but at the wrong time. You didnt say it but, try your feeders in the morning and late afternoon and your "jet li" spot in between. If you are already doing this, well is either of your feeders close to water? if it were me, i would try to hunt as close to food and water as possible, maybe do some scouting over the summer. find where they are bedding down and which feeders they hit at what times. these things are that much of a secret but so many folks get caught up on tricks that they miss some basics.

I agree with stren .sounds like u are at the right place at the wrong time. Also scouting is very important .don't really see the need to get out too soon before daylight.an hour would be fine.I'm not doubting ur intelligence one bit but are u being still and wearing the right cover scent?hopefully u are not using pine tree scent in an apple orchard.lol.I'm sure u are not.and as far as designer camo...no need .I know plenty of guys that hunt in blue jeans and flannels.not me of course !!!! just basically do your scouting over the summer and apply a little common sense and u will be successful.Good luck!!!!

Yeah, no pine tree scent and I'm slow, but very quiet. I've done some scouting, but I still don't know all the trails on the properety. I'll keep plugging away and hopefully get better at it. Any advice on attractants like comeerdeer or doe estrus. waste of time? Thanks for the help.

Well what I think you need to do is get very familiar with your whole layout of your land.Take a couple hours each week just exploring different areas of your property and take notes as far as where u see the most sign . By the time hunting season gets here you ought to have a really good idea how the deer are traveling and where to put your stands.By the way I am 38 but have been hunting since i was 12. As far as come ere deer I haven't had much luck with it but some of my huntin buddies have. And as far as cover scent you can never go wrong with earth scent and I also use the earth scent wafers. And for deer attractant I use doe in estrus on a drag line behind me .Start about 100 yards from your stand and drag it all the way to your stand. Works very well during the rut. Good luck my man and can't wait to hear your deer stories this year.

Also, one thing I forgot to mention...there is a 15 acre pond about 75 yards from one of the blinds and a feeder 30 yards in the opposite direction from the blind. We see deer on the dam all the time (unless I have a gun in g enerally tend to focus on the feeders more than the water. the way the blind is situated, you can barely see the water, but you can see the dam. Someone told me that deer normally drink at night. Any truth to that? Thanks.

No they just don't drink at night. They drink like we do when they get thirsty. Bucks drink alot during the rut while out chasin does. Might be a good idea to set up a trail camera and see where you are getting the most action. Don't blow big money on one tho. Walmart has a tasco for 79.00 . not a bad price. And good enuff to see what you wanna see.

Just curious, what kind of range of target will trigger the camera. The best place for me to set it up ( to cover themost ground ) would be 75-100 yards to the other side of the damn.

most only range between 30 -100 feet . unless you spend big bucks. No where close to pond or beat down trail around?

I can set it up closer to the pond where I know they are coming in out of a gulch. There is another spot about 75 yards away where they come up out of a deep riverbed. Guess I'll have to set more than one up. Would really like to see what all is out there and catch them red handed.

Yeah but you can't be everywhere at once. Many of times I would sit in my treestand and watch deer come out from where I was gonna sit !!! It is frustrating !!!! All boils down to the right place at the right time.
