I need help picking out a new 12 guage

Postby WHITE TAIL » Sat Nov 08, 2008 9:28 am

Hey guys. I am looking to buy a new 12 guage shotgun. My son and I have started hunting recently and I want something reliable but also versatile. I am going to mainly use it for deer hunting in dog drives but I also want to be able to use it for other things like ducks and rabbits. Some help with a good reliable gun and some choke combos would really help. Thanks

Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s are both awesome, affordable, reliable guns.

500 or 870

Postby nighthawk » Mon Nov 10, 2008 5:29 pm

I used a 500 and 870 for many years until this year I bought a 11-87 with a nikon scope which put me in for 1100 big ones. The 11-87 has a thumb hole stock. shot it with Hornady SST's and at 100 yards I am consitently 1 inch hig and at 150 yards 1 inch low. Now I just need the big one to step out.....

Im not sure of the price off the top of my head, but I am looking at the new Remington auto loader. 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch mags. Likely could get a slug barrel with it. Reviews I have read have all been that its better than the Browning.

Well if money isnt an object, the Remington 870sp Shureshot is an awesome gun, great for deer and turkey, and Im sure would be good for anything else as well. It is pretty versatile as it can be shot right or left handed, and with it being an 870, the choices of barrels, chokes, etc are wide open. It has a pistol grip style stock and I think it feels great. It will be the next new gun I pick up for a replacement of my current deer gun. They run @ $500

If you want versitility, you should consider getting a shotgun that comes with two barrels (a riffled slug barel, and a smoth bore with adjustable choke). You could use it to hunt pretty much any game. Although 12 gauge is fairly standard, you may also want to consider a 20 gauge if you son will be shooting it (depending on how old/big he is).

NYbuckhunter is right Mosberg and Remington make god guns for the price. Their mosels 500 and 870 are hard to beat for the price.

I use a Mossberg 500, great gun. Took the white bead off the end and added a Tru-Glo sight which made a good improvement for it. As for the choke I like to use Mod. with number ones. Had it jam once due to a loose screw though, but other than that it's been real realiable.
Got a couple quick pop shots off...

I just bought the Mossberg 835 Ultra Mag....pretty good gun...but the 500 is a all around good gun and good price....in VA, there around $239 for the Mossberg 500 and you can get the remington 870 for about $277.

I have an 835 in the safe. Mine (not saying all) has an ejection/loading problem when you use 3 1/12's. AFTER first round is fired things get bound up if you feed a second 3 1/2,,I have to use a 3" as a second round. For turkey, its generally not necessary, but it is irriatating. I had a model 500 also, it had a problem with the plug spring crowding up the mag tube and would not load rounds. I had to remove the mag cap and shove something down the tube and push the spring back down. I have a Rem 870 Supermag,,,never had a lick of trouble with it, son now shoots trap with it.

benelli

Postby toonmouse » Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:58 pm

I went with the benelli super nova. Its a little more expensive than the 870 but it has the recoil supression built into the pad and stock. Also you can eject one shell out of the chamber and not cycle a new one with the push of a button on the pump. I wanted the benelli for the higher sight rail than the 870 which i had used for many years. You can get slug barrels for both. I suggest looking at a few and find the one that pulls up the best for you without having to adjust to sight. they are all different. but i love my super nova.

I have a Mossberg 835 that I hunted deer with for years (and has alot of kills) and I just recetly bought a used Remington 1100 with 2 barrels for $450 and IMO there is not much comparison. The 1100 is a much better gun, is evenly weighted and just an overall nicer gun to shoot. Killed my first deer with it this year. I have also used it for trap shooting and like I said, just a smooth shooting gun.
