I've got this old Mossberg 835....

Postby cullbuck » Tue Dec 08, 2009 7:28 pm

I've got an old Mossberg 835. I don't use it for anything and I'm thinking of slapping one of those fully rifled barrels with the integral scope mount on it. I'm thinking it could be a good short range, brush gun for shots 50 yards or less. I hunt in some thick areas. So is there a "no-brainer" slug that you guys use that is a standard for this type of hunting?
I'm a fan of the "impact shot"!

The rifled barrels are designed, for the most part, to shoot the new saboted slugs. There's no way around it though. You'll need to shoot each one, to see which one your gun likes best. But it'll probably be far more than a 50- yard-gun after that. Many will shoot accurately up to 150 yards.. We've had great luck with the pricey Winchester Partition Gold sabots.

If all you want is a "brush gun" stick to the old barrel and 3.5 inch buckshot using the factory "full" choke. It'll easily kill deer well past 50 yards.

A "brush gun" is a slang term for a weapon used to hunt thick cover, swamps, small, thick conifers and such, where shots will be close-in. -Runner

Nope, not me. In fact I've passed up some shots at deer and bear, turkeys too, that I just KNEW were deer, bear, etc,....but just couldn't see enough to be 110% sure. So far, they all turned out to be just what I thought they were. But ya know, that one time you roll the dice, that'll be the time it isn't! A man in VT killed his son just last spring that way.....I don't ever want that person to be me!
