Hey, howse it going?
I live in Iroquois Co. and I hunt in Saline Co.
I used to hunt with some other people, and we hunted McDonough, Hancock, and/or Massac counties...but since then I was invited along with my oldest friend to hunt Saline Co.
My friend invited myself and my 2 Sons along 2 years ago. The property is awesome, it borders the Shawnee Nat'l. Forrest, so we have that additional ground to hunt.
I have yet to get a deer on this land, but I'm not discouraged by that...the deer sign is EVERYWHERE...it's just a matter of - time spent.

I live in Morgan and hunt Morgan, Cass, Scott, Greene, Pike, Calhoun, Schuyler, Brown, Mason counties. Had some ground in Madison and Macoupin but its outfitted now. Not as lucky as it sounds as alot of the properties are small, a few 5 acres etc. Pike was alot better hunting before the locals sold their souls to the devil er I mean outfitters. Good thing is the outfitters are MOVING ON! Fulton county is supposed to be popular with them now. I hate to hear that for any Fulton county hunters out there. Kentucky and Ohio too, THANK GOD!

SGT, you hunting with an outfitter or on your own? We got plenty of deer, Im in Morgan county. Corn is gonna be an issue this year. Some farmers dont know if they'll get it out before the freeze. Most of the cuttin has been on the beans, they wont take wind, snow, ice etc as well as corn. Bow hunting has been real slow. Gonna do our gunhunting here in Morgan this year. Ive got a photobucket thing, my screen name, has a bunch of deer pics from here. I drew 1 gun E/S and 1 A/O, got 1 more E/S and 3 more A/O during the random draw and bought 2 more A/O over the counter. Only got the 1 set of muzzleloader tags, last few years its been rather lean by then. 7 days of the pumpkin army puts them on high alert. Had a nice buck in close last year but he heard my hammer on my sidelock click into place. You hunting north or south of the interstate? We've got 32 acres in Pike county so I may get a doe tag or two for over there in case we go that way for a day or two or for the winter doe season.

I'm going to be in the Jacksonville area. A friend of my son owns 40/50 acers there and no one has hunted it. He doesn't hunt either. It's like buying the winning lottery ticket. Not only having a place to hunt but a place thats not hunted. There's allot of tags left the last time I checked for Morgan. Hang on........I just checked....For Morgan County there are 101 firearm and 40 muzzleloader permits as of 10:10 this date. Good luck buddy. Who knows maybe we'll run into each other out in the deer woods :!: :!:

I think the DNR "made" extra tags, most years we're sold out by now. Of course with the new phone in system I dont think all deer are getting reported or tagged. With the economy too may not be as many tags selling/land to hunt. Thats neat I live in Jaksonville. Yep you hit the lottery there, not much ground left that isnt leased or overhunted/packed. East side of Morgan county is flat farm ground so that only leaves 2/3 huntable. Most of our ground is north near the Cass county border, we've got one farm to gunhunt in Cass and a few we can bowhunt. I didnt get Cass gun tags this year, first time in several years. Usualy get one set. We've got a few spots we trade work etc to hunt, few more that are friends/family and a few farms we lease mostly in Morgan. We've got a few spots scattered in the surrounding counties but nothing big, 5 acres to 80 or so. Rut ought to be slowing down by gun season, bucks ought to be done with the does and recouping or out looking for more hot does. Caught it just right last year, bucks were up running scrape lines again first gunseason. Took a 150ish 8pt and let alot of bucks walk. Yep, never know may run into each other. Good restuarants are almost non existent, El Racherito mexican aint bad. Got a new mexican restuarant supposed to be open in a few weeks east of our Farm n Home. Ponderosa aint bad, all the fast food/gutbuster joints suck. Both chinese are good, best buffet is of course a buffet. Everyones been bragging about Normas Northstar cafe on Walnut and Main but I havent tried it yet. We've got an Applebee's but its hit and miss. For a town of 22,000 there aint much to eat or do. Hardee's has the best fast food breakfast here, opens at 5am for hunters. Let me know if you need any info etc. Good Luck, hope you get your guttin knife bloody.

Thanks for all that info. Maybe you already mentioned it but my son always takes us to a place that looks like you eating in someones house. When you walk in there are tables and then there are 1 or 2 rooms off to the right that you can sit in and eat. Food is pretty good. They have these combo dishes. pancakes, bacon, ham, eggs and my favorite, biscuits and gravey :!: :!: :!:
I think there are a few motels not far from IC. Will be there sat for my kids game. After that I'll be in the woods, snoopin' and poopin' :!: :!:
Good luck my friend and who knows, we may run into each other one day for breakfast. I drive a dark green wrangler with a black hard top.
Good luck and good hunting :!: :!: :!:

We've got several restuarants that remind me of that? Norma's looks like a house form the outside so that may be it? Took the kids for a drive a little while ago, last 2 days have been sunny, windy and dry, farmers are picking corn as fast as they can. Got rain coming tonight, ugh. Drove by IC twice today, have to go right by it going to work and the sitters. My neice's ex husband works security at IC(he did own 40 or 80acres but had to sell it last I knew). Small world. Did see several deer this afternoon. Bucks are bird dogging the does, trying to keep them in the timber. Planning on doing some bowhunting next few days. Hopefully Saturday is cool and dry. I drive a red S-10 extended cab, may run into each other. Good luck, hope the scouting shows ya a booner to set up on.

Bucks are chasing does even in this heat. Buddy got a button buck Wednesday evening and a big 5pt that shoulda been an 8 or 9 Thursday AM. Another buddy has let 3 bucks walk last 2 days(sat pm and sun am) on one of our leases. Key on water, doe bedding areas and/or funnels right now. Good Luck, we've got most of the gunstands and blinds set up and ready to roll. Big population of does. Enough bucks that a guy may want to be a little picky.

Seen a few huge bucks both racks and body but just couldn't get the right shot. :( I did kill the biggest doe I ever killed. :!: :!: :!: Her head is almost as big as a horses head. The butcher weighed her and she came out to 146 pounds f/d....
As soon as I get the pics and in my photo bucket I 'll try and post a few. Aweek and a half to go and maybe I'll still get a shot at a buck.

Good Deal, congrats, sounds like an old matriarch doe. I didnt have a "successful" season. I had my 13 yr old nephew sitting with me. His first year gun hunting. We had a basket 6 or 8 and a doe come thru friday am. I waited for him to take the buck and I was going to take the doe but he couldnt get lined up, whacked the barrel on a tree. They got too far away and in the brush. Friday pm we had a real nice buck hang up about 60 yards out in the brush, nephew had just coughed so I dont know if that was what did it or not? Saturday am I had a doe 15ft away and he got excited, moved and said theres a doe, lol. Needless to say she didnt stick around she stopped out at about 80 yards but I didnt allow for the distance, shot low and hit a limb between her and I. Sunday at sunup we had a doe come in at less then 20 yards. He had trouble getting her in the scope. I never even raised my gun, she got off into the brush too and got clean away. To add insult to injury at the last minute I decided not to go to a stand across the creek since it was running good and deeper then normal but we could see it. I knew if he got wet the hunt was over for that morning. About 9am 3 does walked right in front of it. So no deer for him or I. We had fun and thats what counts. 2nd season I get to hunt thursday and friday pm alone and maybe all day saturday. He'll join me on sunday. Corn is still in on our main farm so that hurt us bad. Noone was shooting near as much as normal. Our group did have some success on our hunting properties, 10pt, 9pt, spikeish thing, button buck and 3 does. They started cutting the corn at sundown last night, look out deer 2nd season. Gonna try and get out for some bowhunting this week. Congrats again on the doe. Sometimes those old does are harder to give a truck ride to then a buck. Gorgeous weather, couldnt ask for better.

Hope things change for the best for you with the second season. Your right about the weather. All 3 days were great. I really enjoyed the woods this year. Seen allot of deer and had 2 really huge bucks within 50 yards but the first one came in the first light of day and I watched the 2nd for 20 mins or so as he was walking right at me but turned off into the woods right at the largest clumps of brush in the area. Anyway it was all great being out there.
Lets hope 2nd season is allot better for you and lets hope I'll see a 3 buck without all the brush!!!!!
