Stay away from calls early in the season. Although deer are vocal all year long you really won't find any calls that draw deer to you early. Stick with finding the food the deer are feeding on and hunt it in the afternoon/evenings. Try to find the trails from feeding to bedding and hunt them. Good luck.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.

The only call you might give a try if you want to take a doe at the very beginning of deer season (bow or muzzelloader, whichever is first) is a fawn distress call.

Late in the summer the does are still very protective acting with their fawns and when they hear a fawn screaming for help they could react by coming in running and then stop and look around for the fawn that was calling for help.

Other than that one call KwackWacker is right on in that regular calls don't work very well if at all in the late summer and concentrate on travel trails that deer are showing signs of using.
