Well, opening day was ok for me. It was great to get out in the field again, just had a couple of problems. Heres the low down....
Got into my stand before light, about 7am. I started getting everything in place and looked to my right, doe standing in my shooting lane broadside at 15 yards, problem was, I didnt have my release on yet. Doe leaves, I get my release on and nock an arrow. 5 minutes goes by, 6 point standing in the same place as the doe was for 5 minutes, he gets a pass this year to grow up some more. 10 minutes later, 2 nice does and a yearling doe go by at 45 yards, no shot. They then circle back and are feeding at 20 yards, but I have no clear shot. The biggest doe then starts walking toward my shooting lane, so I come to full draw, wait for her body to get into the lane and release. THWACK! she turns and takes off across the field with the other two following, and then I notice that I hit her really high, too high. Damn it! I wait about 20 minutes and make a couple of calls, then I go up to my dad's and wake him up. He comes with me after another hour to go look for a blood trail. Nothing near the spot that I shot her, so we walk over to where I saw her cross the road and run into a stand of thick pines, no blood. I go back into the pines, bingo! Blood trail! As we follow the blood it starts getting heavier, so I start thinking, maybe I didnt hit her as high as I thought I did! Then we find the arrow, coated in bright red blood, no bubbles or foam though, but as we keep going, the blood goes from a few drops to big splashes and I figure I am going to find her soon with that much blood. All of a sudden, the blood just stops, we look in circles for an hour and nothing. We go back to the house, have a few cups of coffee and then go back, still cant find anything past that spot. Damn! I did hit her way too high, in the muscle and it must have clotted up. I call Deer Search Inc. and talk to 2 guys, both say the same thing without me mentioning my idea. Crap, my first lost deer. So I call my girlfriend and we go get lunch, then I go back and get my gear back on and head out again. I get in the stand @ 4:30 and its windy, but calms right back down at 5:30. Right before dark a nice doe starts feeding her way toward me in the field, so I get ready. She walks right into my shooting lane and stops broadside, so I keep thinking "aim low, aim low" and I release. Arrow sails an inch below her belly. AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! She runs off, then circles back and starts coming back in again! WOOOHOOOO!!!! Im gonna get another shot! Nope, she hangs up just 2 steps out of the lane and starts blowing and walking away. I figure what the heck and start blowing back at her. She starts coming back again, I cant believe it! She again hangs up just a few steps out of the lane and then takes off. At that point it was getting dark, so I gathered my things and left. Im glad theres alot of hunting season left! I really did hate the fact that I injured the first one and couldnt recover her. Thats the first time its happened to me.
