Just about finished my food plot

Postby NYBuckhunter » Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:50 pm

I figured Id give a food plot a shot this year, so I convinced my dad to let me put in a 1200 sq ft plot down by my stand. We finally had some nice, rain free weather today, and since my bow is in the shop, I went over there after work and got started. I moved some bon-fire wood around and mowed the area down as close as I could and picked up any big sticks and such. I then got out the old 1968 Jet Flow tiller, cleaned the mouse nest out of the flywheel and added gas. She fired up on the 3rd pull! I love old equipment, it just seems to run forever. Anyhow, I wheeled that out back and tilled up a nice plot. I grabbed the rock rake and got rid of the big clumps and rocks and then started spreading the bag of "Secret Spot" that I picked up. The bag said it would be enough for 4500 sq ft, but I dont know where they got that from, it only covered about half of mine! So I raked it in on the half that I got done and called it a day.Oh well, I have to pick my bow up at Gander Mountain tomorrow anyhow, so Ill grab another bag and finish it up tomorrow evening. Hopefully this stuff works good, I know a couple of guys that have used it out in the middle of the woods and it does very well in shady spots, which is what my plot is. I think Ill go and get a bit of fertilizer this weekend too and give it a little extra nourishment.

Overseeding is just as bad as underseeding. It could be that they were talking about a no-till area. I doubt that you overseeded, but you may have if you only got 600sqft.

I used a spreader and threw it lighter than I would with grass seed. Ill have to wait and see what happens in a week or so, it says it will start germinating within a week.

This is interesting. I agree with Doc, hopefully you didn't over seed it. You will have to keep us posted with the results, maybe it will be ok.
Where is your stand relative to the plot? Got photos?

My stand is about 10 yards from the plot. The plot is next to and under 4 apple trees that I thin out every year so that they produce more. I figured that the plot just might hold the deer more after the apples are gone. Here is my stand in the hedgerow, the plot is just to the right of it. I am going to stay away from it for a week or so , but I will get pics once it starts growing.

Well, I checked the plot today and its doing great! Theres a bunch of stuff growing, some of its already 3 or 4 inches high! I didnt expect to see that at all, the seed said at least a week to germinate at all, its been 6 days and its half green already! Im not sure exactly what it is thats growing already, but it looks almost like clover, but the leaves are not separated. Im gonna go back on Tuesday evening and get some pics, Im excited to see its progress again.
