Kansas

Postby mountaintman » Sun Dec 07, 2008 9:47 am

I posted something similar in the general hunting section, my apology. I planning on a hunt in Kansas in 2009 and would like to do it on some of the "walk-in" properties. I'm not much on guided hunts, I like to do the hunting. Anyway, where might be a good place/county to start looking. I thank you for your help in advance.

First welcome to the DHC forum.

As I explained to Pittsy in another thread in this section there really is no 'trophy county or counties or deer unit' here in Kansas like some states seem to have, each season trophy bucks can be seen and taken from just about anywhere in the state.

The entire state has been under a trophy whitetail management program for quite a few years now and just about anywhere in the eastern half of the state could have the next top 10 state buck come out of it, North and NE Kansas bucks are a bit bigger in body size than southern Kansas bucks as a rule.

The only place I wouldn't suggest is the counties or deer units along the Colorado state line as all deer numbers are generaly down there and its a mix of whitetails and mulies.

I will say the area that has the most whitetails in sheer numbers is in SE Kansas, there are a lot of deer in that area of the state including some big bucks and its possible to see herds of deer running together in places there at times.

Also not all Kansas deer units have non-resident tags and not all that do have the same number of tags available so as I told Pittsy you need to select up to 4 units listed in the non-resident application so you have a good chance of getting a tag.

The Kansas Fish and Game site has a list of state record deer and the counties taken and it is speckled from areas here and there pretty much all over the state.

So I would apply for any 4 units in the clear area, which ever unit you end up with you will have a chance to see good deer, as I said in sheer deer numbers the SE is hard to beat.
