I've posted about the walk in hunting (private land open to the public) here in the forums Kansas section several times in the past.
Unfortunately since Kansas has become an open state to 'out of state deer hunters' it has gotten increasingly difficult to find farmers and ranchers that will allow people that knock on the door to get permission to hunt their land for free, its even gotten more difficult for us that live in the state.
A lot of the farmers and ranchers here have gotten a 'pie in the sky' mentality to their land (fed to them by the state govt) where they say no to that person knocking on the door asking for permission because they believe in their mind that any minute some rich out of state hunters may call them and be more than willing to pay them thousands of dollars to deer hunt for just a few days each year on their land regardless of its size or deer carrying ability so less of them are allowing even us in state people access unless we want to lease their land.
The state has no big federal or state owned forested land, we have a very little government owned land at all, the exception is mainly land around the reservoirs and state lakes, small refuges, so besides that if you don't have deep pockets to lease or pay to hunt some land then you likely can't or won't have much luck in getting access to privately owned land so for the most part all that leaves is the hunting land around reservoirs and 'walk in hunting land'.
I've posted this before, below is a state map of Kansas that has the 2008 walk in hunting areas in yellow, a new one for the 2009 hunting season will be on the site at the end of Aug or 1st of Sept, the state pays the farmers and ranchers a fee to allow the public to park on the side of the road and walk in and hunt pieces of their land.
