Last hoorah-any advise/

Postby bobnc » Tue Dec 20, 2011 3:30 pm

I have been hunting for 2 months+ on some leased land in NC. Some wooded land near a river, some in the woods, some plowed up sweet potatoe fields and a big winter wheat field /with a small green grass field on the edge of woods. I have been very patient, quiet, scent free, some rattling/grunting, put out corn/plus "come her deer", used a buck bomb, doe urine-but in over 15 4 hour sits in different stands-I have seen 1 doe coming out of the tall winter wheat at dusk. I am considering putting out more corn and attractant on Monday and then hunting that area on Wednesday. Since I haven't seen them eating sweet potatoes-I am puzzled as what they are eating and where? Any advise?????? :(

You might have to get in the woods if you are only hunting over the feed fields. If you saw that last doe by the winter wheat try to figure where she came from to get in the wheat field and hunt that area.

This time of year the deer have calmed down with little to no rut action. There main goal now is to feed up for the winter and to renurish their bodies from the rut. Oh, and they like to try to stay alive too. This means that the deer have more than likely heard shots from other hunters in the area and have started to move strictly at night or late hours. Deer still need a source of water and they can not lay still all day especially during cold days. I would refrain from rattling and using scents. I even prefer not to grunt or make any noise. I just like to sit and make the deer feel as though there is nothing different. Deer have started to return to there pre-rut locations and feeding spots. The key point is find the food and then find the paths that the deer are taking to get there. Deer will walk up to a half a mile to get to a corn field when it is cold.

Best suggestion I can give you is to hunt the woods a few hundred yards from the food source, but close to a water source. I actually killed a buck a week ago a 3pm getting out of his bed in a 2 year old cutover going to the creek to get a drink. 8 pointer 17.5 inches.

Happy Hunting and Holidays.

Gotta agree with 24/7 safety/feed/water areas/bedding are best bets right now.
