late season success

Postby joshcaniglia » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:18 pm

Im a very new hunter, this is only my 2nd season deer hunting. I recently was able to get a piece of land that I can hunt every week and get steady results. I only got a rifle last week, before that it was a h&r 12ga pump. So needless to say I didnt have the best range. Now I shoot a ruger m77 markII with a zeiss 3.5 x 10 x 44 scope. Now heres my question. I hunt a power line and i sit on the edge of the woods looking out at the power line. my stand is in between were they bed and eat, but im not sure with the rut coming to an end if they are still gonna walk that far to eat. So any suggest on how to lure out some late season bucks. Im a new hunter and just trying to learn some new hints and tricks. It will be much appreciated

My guess would be that although you may see less frantic activity, they're still going to have to eat. In fact, from all I've read and heard, post-rut activity for deer is ALL about eating and fattening up for the winter. Especially bucks, who for the past few weeks have only thought about one thing - hot does. They go kinda crazy and run themselves ragged and hungry looking to mate. Once that's done, they concentrate on eating and restoring calories and body mass. Does get run around by bucks too, so they're in the same boat. They need to eat. Food plots are the best place to hang out.
