Limb fatigue in cold weather

Postby Brow Tine » Mon Dec 01, 2008 12:21 pm

Does anyone have any input on limb fatigue in cold weather?

I don’t know why this question popped in my head but I was thinking about drawing my bow in cold weather (temps in the teens and below zero)

Could the limbs become brittle the colder it gets?
I would hate to have a limb blow up in my face.

Limbs are made of composites not metal. You should'nt worry about your limbs blowing up in colder temps. The only thing that may be a concern is things will tighten up in colder temps and your bow will be harder to draw back.

Yep, no worries about shooting in the cold, I hunt late season archery most years and it gets cold cold cold outside up here. The biggest problems with late archery are lots of clothes on so you cant move as well and you gotta stop shivering long enough to shoot!

Has anyone had any experiance with their bows being louder when its under 5 degrees? or was it just my teeth chattering last week?

Moving parts on the bow will make more noise when they are cold. Im not sure were your noise is coming from but I used a little powered graphite in two places that was making noise and that seemed to make it go away for the meantime. My bow usually does not make any noise when the temps are above 10 degrees or so. I dont like to use any oils or grease that may smell. I have seen some "scent free" lubricants at the local sporting goods stores.

What Brow Tine said is very true, when temps get down to around zero bows do tend to make more noises and the cold can even seem to amplify them.

I would suggest maybe leaving your bow outside in the truck or somewhere in near zero weather for several hours and then have someone go outside with you to stand nearby while you draw an arrow and they can help pinpoint where the noise is coming from, the bow or the arrow being drawn or if its you.
