Looking for the next best deer slug???

Postby BrowNitsDown » Thu Oct 02, 2008 1:20 pm

I would 100% reccomend the Hornady rubber tipped shells, i know sabots are a big deal but hornady slugs shoot just as far and just as fast with a smooth barrel or a riffled barrel. I had big problems with my rem. 870 smooth until i shot the hornady's.

I have found that different guns and even barrels shoot differently with different ammo. Its all in trying different ammo until you find what works.

I agree NYBH , it's really a matter of preference. I use only Remingtom Copper solids in my Mossberg 12 gauge....but I do like Hornady rifle rounds

My Mossberg 835 didn't digest the Hornady's very well. The Winchester Platinums shoot great and hit hard.

I hunt primarily with slug guns in the part of PA that I hunt. I have a 12ga Winchester 1300 that loves Lightfields. I also have a 20ga NEF Single shot that will only shoot the Winchester Supreme with the Nosler Partition gold slugs. Each gun is different and seems to find a brand that it likes. One very important thing to remember is to clean your barrel after every 5 shots when sighting in with sabot slugs. The plastic jacket builds up in the rifeling quickly and really reduces the accuracy of your slugs. Make sure to take a cleaning rod and brush with you to the range so you can try a few different slugs. Also a good tip, sight your gun in 2 inches high at 50yards and that should put you dead on at 100 yard depending on the drop on the box. Read the back of the box for better indications of the drop yardage, but most are pretty much the same. I will say this, once you find the slug that your gun likes, you will be very satified with the accuracy of the new loads that are on the market today. Good luck to all this season. :D

BTW guys, Hornady SSTs are not designed for smooth bores.

I have shot light fields since they have been around.I have no complaints about thier accuracy but seldom get an exit hole.I just picked up a beretta slug gun so i figured i would try the hornady sst. They held an 8 inch group at 50 yds so i went back to the lightfields and they are shooting hole for hole at 100 yds.The guy at the gun shop told me that a lot of guns dont like the hornadys because they are so fast. They are 700 fps faster than the lightfields.
