Make sure you don't gut shoot em!

Postby Buckstopper21 » Thu Nov 25, 2004 12:19 pm

This year was my 3rd year of deer hunting and each year was a really great and unusual experience. This year I had a nice 8 point sneek up on me and I ended up taking a shot between two little trees and under a barbed wire fence. Since it wasn't the best shooting lane I ended up gut shooting it. That wasn't a good thing to do at all. When I was field dressing him, my dad wouldn't even come close to me because it smelled so terrible. The farmers kids were with us too and they were just about ready to lose it. MORAL: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD CLEAN SHOT BEFORE YOU SHOOT

A good clean shot can even bring that about though. I shot one at the base of the neck this year from the front, the bullet traveled the length of her and exited out the groin area. Not my favorite smell either. :D

Hey Buckstopper, even the best of us make a bad shot every now and then, so don't be too hard on yourself. Congrats for following up and finding your buck. :)

The same idea applies to field dressing. Make sure you dont cut to deep when "unzipping", my kiddos think its funny when i say it that way, the belly. last year I made to deep of a cut and put a 1 inch cut in the stomach. I was right over it and the smell went streight up my nose, horrible bad!
