Many muzzleloader hunters here?

Muzzleloaders are growing in popularity and it would be great to hear from everyone fired up about muzzloaders. Traditional and modern alike!

PS. What brand rifle would you recomend to someone wanting to try black powder for the fist time?

muzzleloaders

Postby DocHolladay » Mon Dec 13, 2004 11:36 pm

i usually hunt with a rifle, but i was wanting more deer this year so i bought a ml license. i use a hawkins rifle, but would like a newer model, like an inline. i think a good way to find a good rifle is talk to other hunters in your area, then you can go to basspro shops or cabelas website and compare. the internet is an awsome resource to use for information and deal finding. happy huntin.

Always been a traditional fan. Lyman is a good one.
Like Doc said, check out Cabela's and Bass Pro. Lots to choose from. Or a couple more of my favorites,
www.davide-pedersoli.com
www.grafs.com
www.crazycrow.com will have all the possibles you will need for your traditional shooting, cappers, flasks, powder horns and etc..

tips for hunt

Postby DocHolladay » Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:20 am

try to look for sign if you can. be patient. breathe to calm down before the shot. take your time, squeeze the trigger, don't pull(jerk). if you feel yourself flinch before the shot, start all over.

: I use a 50 Cal inline Remington 700MLR. Have had much luck with Thompson Center Break away sabots 240 grain and 100 grains of powder. Never failed to harvest at least 1 or 2 deer each year .What do you prefer to use?

I have two different ones that I use, I like my knight wolverine, it's got some age on it but it shoots beautifully. I have taken deer with it every year I have used it. It is a nice short rifle that I can take just about anywhere.

My other muzzleloader that I have fallen in love with is a savage 10ml2. The gun shoots like a champ. It is a little bit heavier and longer than the knight, so I don't like it as well when I am carrying it in the mountains.

I use both and inline and a hawken rifle. I have killed nice bucks with both. I ty to shoot a deer with my hawkens every year for old times. I love that gun. I killed a mellanistic 11pt with it a couple of years ago. There is a special spot in my heart for that old gun. I just take my inline cause of the scope and range it carry's.

I like a 50cal Knight muzzeloader. personally its my favorite time of the year because i have had more success in early muzzleloading than any other time. I think that deer are less skittish during this time because they havent been through the heavy hunting pressure that gun season brings around. Usually opening day of muzzleloader brings some big smiles to my face by the end of the day.

T/C RIFLE

Postby Guest » Sun Jan 28, 2007 9:11 am

I have a T/C hawken 50 cal,a T/C Scout 50 cal.and the T/C Encore.I guess you could say I like T/C rifles. The Scout is an inlike, the Hawken a traditional and the Encore is inline.Out of all of them the Hawkwn has to be my favorite.Cap and ball, not flint.Ever notice when people talk about the Hawken they tend to misspell it?Like Hawkins or Hawkens.Like a lillte thing I noticed.

muzzleloader

Postby xxhotcoffee » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:59 pm

I like muzzleloading. I have owned a Ky longrilfle CVA 45 cal., and now a TC Grey Hawk 50 cal, with SS barrel. It has a black composite stock, filigree on the works, and I just love it. Its fairly light to carry, a lot lighter than hubbys...(TC New Englander) an inch shorter barrel, and it seems made for me. Im more accurate with mine than he is...or more lucky? lol, cant say for sure...lol
I shoot 245 grain powerbelts with 80 grains of @f Pyrodex, I could shoot 100 grains max , but I like 80. No recoil at all.
I would reccomend it for a first time hunter or anyone. I think I got a good deal on mine, it was used, and was only 125.00.
Now Im working on getting my first buck, I think tomorrow might be the day unless I rest up tomorrow and go friday.
Good Hunting all!!

I picked up Ml'ing simply because it adds more days to the hunting.

I use a Knight Disc Elite bolt action (inline) .50 cal.
Black with SS barrel. Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 scope.
I use Hornady 240 gr. sabots with 95 gr. of pyrodex.

This sucker makes me smile everytime I pull the trigger. THWAAAAaaaaaaccccckkkkkKKK! :D

I am in love with my NEF 50.cal inline. Heavy oak stock and grip with Blued barrel and BSA 3-9x40 scope. Plus I have 2 more barrels I can swap into this set up a .308 and 12 ga rifled. All are single shot break barrel. Next year I will buy new scope mounts with see-thru rings, I do miss iron sights for close shots or rainy days. I am shooting Hornady SST 250 gr sabots with 100 gr triple 7. I hold a .5" group at 100 yards dead on.

I own 8 traditional muzzleloaders from 32 cal. to 54 cal, most of them are flinlocks. The gun I use the most for match shooting or hunting is a 50 cal. Traditions long rifle (sweet shooter), I know it is a manufactured gun, but it can hold its own with the custom built guns.
I don't kill innocent animals, just the ones that look guilty.

I started with a Knight MK85 50cal around 90'. Shot my first deer with it. So, i'm a Knight fan. I eventually picked up a Knight disc, synthetic/stainless 50cal. Love it. And what gun is complete without a leupold scope.
They have better in-lines now, but I have no need to change.

to me muzzleloader hunting is the best...i hunt muzzleloader during firearms season as well...the only downfall is one shot..but u only should need one...with todays technology its nothing to shoot 200-250 yards with a muzzleloader...thats good for me because we cant use high power rifles in indiana...not to mention they are way more accurate than a slug gun...yes tompson center is a nice gun..my pops owns one..but the price is insane..yea u can change the barrel buts thats another 250 bucks each..not including a scope and forend..for those of us who want one but dont want to pay that much..traditions makes a inline called a vortek...awesome gun..brother has one...has all the right stuff...ported and fluted barrel, remove the breach just like on the endeavor...basically it is a T/C endeavor ..but u cant switch barrels..this gun runs 400 for black synthetic stocks and stainless..very nice looking gun...and accurate beyond 200 if u have the ability to shoot that far

Ive got modern inlines but never hunt with them anymore. My favorite powder burner is a custom poor boy .50 cal percussion sidelock. With 777 and patched roundballs it shoots better then I can. I like my flinters, musket and rifles too, and try to use them each year too.

Dont know Quigley but a seller did, lol. Just finished a .36 sidelock percussion Po' Boy. It aint pretty but it shoots. Traded 10 flints and 2 Victor no.2 DLS for the lock. Bought the barrel online and with S&H I got $35 in it. Did break from tradition and it has a fiberglass ramrod. Used small fence steeples(staples) for the ramrod holder. Front sight is made out of a quarter. Rear sight is cut out of a dime size washer. Bought the trigger mechanism online for $25 with S&H. made the trigger guard out of an old tablespoon. The stock was from the old barn on our farm when we tore part of it off. 125 year old oak. Linseed oil sealed it good. At 25 yeards off a bench it shoots 6 shot groups into a 1 1/2" group with a bore swab after each 2 shots. Thats minute of squirrel for me.
