Mid Sept. scrape lines!!

Postby chris lavoie » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:32 pm

Found an area with 4 scrapes today. All scrapes within 50 yards. All made either yesterday or this morning. Lots of fresh deer tracks in the scrapes. Why do you think bucks scrape so early in the season?

That is really interesting! What state are you hunting in? Bucks don't typically get into the rutting mood until it's cooler and/or the change of amount of light during the day kicks in towards October.
Although this saying might be a little cliche, it's so true... hunting is not just a passion, it's an obsession.....it's part of what defines my life.....and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I was once told by an old hunter (and this makes sense) that as the bucks break apart from their bachelor groups in the later part of the summer they also during this time establish their order of rank within the bucks. Since the younger bucks dont have the head gear to demonstrate their dominance and know that a simple chase by a larger buck will push them out they tend to show their strength by scraping and other rut behaviour. Although at this time it doesnt really mean much in reagrds tot he rut it does tell you that there are bucks in the area.

opportunity is often missed because it is in the form of work.
