mossberg maverick

I was in a pawn shop that had a mossberg Maverick with an extra barrel and wanted $257 for it. I beleive he said a 500? It has a top loader where you pull the lever back. ( I know very little about guns). Is this a good buy. It's sorta greyish, very light weight.

Sounds kinda high for any used Mossberg? Without pics its hard to say, could be worth far less if its not in A1 shape too. I bought a new Mossberg 20ga 500 3 years ago with 3 screw in chokes for $225.

If it's a Maverick, it probably has a black synthetic stock and forearm, correct? That price sounds way high to me, but most pawnshop prices are. You might be able to get it for less if you make an offer.

I paid $217.00 for a new, in the box Mossberg 500, (wood stock and forearm) at Wal-Mart a few months ago. The price is probably still the same. If anything a Maverick should be even less expensive. The extra barrel adds a little, but I would think somewhere in the $200.00 range is closer to "right."

The Maverick is not the same as the 500. It's close, but not the same. The Maverick has a different trigger group with the safety located on the trigger guard rather than the tang mounted safety the 500 has (I understand that's true anyway). Not better or worse, just different really. It seems to me that I remember reading that the Maverick has a fixed choke barrel where the 500 has screw in chokes. I'm not sure if the Maverick has a vent rib or not. The 500 does.

All Mossberg shotguns are fairly light. The Maverick is even lighter with it's synthetic (plastic) stock. I'm willing to bet it will kick pretty hard with slugs or buckshot especially.

Personally, unless I could get a used Maverick CHEAP and I mean CHEAP, I'd just go to Wal-Mart or some place like that and get a 500.

Thanks. I decided on a barely used Remington 870 that came with a smooth bore barrel and an extra barrel for small game and a choke. Both for $275 in very good shape. I'm happy. This will be my first and first time hunter.

Those Mavericks are $187 at walmart.....but not with extra barrel but still. Remington 870 was a good choice.
