Muzzleloader Poll

Postby bp-Outdoors_com » Tue Dec 14, 2004 7:49 pm

Set up a poll in the deer hunting section for picking your choice of muzzleloader. The poll offers choices between modern, traditional and 45 -vs- 50 caliber. Would welcome input from members of this board on a recomendation for a new black powder shooter. I apologize for not placing it here in the muzzleloader forum. Duhhhh!

I voted the Lyman. For a factory rifle it follows the original Hawkens pretty close. A custom built Hawkens would be my next choice if I had the cash.

C'mon guys...out of 1016 registered users, surely more than 6 can vote. Unless you fall in the categories of the poll I posted in the Open Forum. :D

muzzleloader

I picked the thompson center. I own a hawken and a black diamond. I have shot great deer with both. They stand behind their products. I was amazed when I couldnt get my hawken to group anymore and I sent the barrel back to them and they replaced it for free. That tells me somthing.

I see that the savage 10ml is not listed..hands down the best I have ever shot the smokeless powder is great no more clouds to disipate before you see if you hit your target..The rifle will shoot with other powders and pellets..velocities in the 2300 to 2500fps range. Topped with a Leupold 3x9 is as good as it gets. I have a CVA THOMPSON and a D/P and of course my Savage check your local regulations and give one a try

I'm kinda partial to the smoke and smell...without it...like Christmas with no tree. :)

Since I just purchased a Traditions Pursuit LT 50 cal inline muzzleloader with break open action, I'd have to go with it.

i like knight muzzleloaders all the way. everyone in my family that hunts owns at least one knight. they have proven to be very accurate and reliable in all situations. no 1 i have ever talked to has had any problems out of a knight

I shoot the cva optima pro. Very good gun for the money and it hasn't let me down yet. Some friends of mine shoot the thompson center encore, if you can afford one of these babies you can't beat it for accuracy and versatility.

Personally I don't see the hipe in the Thompson Encore. I have seen a 99 dollar traditions 45 cal shoot circles around the thompson. No one can tell me that a 500.00 thompson shoots better than my savage. Slappy the Optima Pro will shoot just as good. As you probably read I shoot the Savage smokeless. I like not having the mess and the smoke and I promise the thompson will not out perform mine, it has been tried and proven.

Been hunting with black powder for 25 years. Always owned cva guns. I was never really impressed with them until I bought the optima pro. Slappy jr shoots the cva Kodiac, also a well made gun. The only drawback to the optima compared to the encore is the weight, the optima is one heavyS.O.B. The encore shoots just as well as the optima but weighs less. Also the wide variety of rifle barrels you can get for it is very appealing to me. Like I said I've been black powder hunting for years and I kind of enjoy the smoke cloud. The gun barrel staying cleaner is something to think about though. Keeping a black powder gun clean is a pain. I like your choice of scopes though. My optima is also topped with a 3x9 Leupold, this scope will make any gun shoot better.

Hello and Hi from UTAH !!
Well when I first got my Traditions Pursuit . I had problems with it closing because some primers are longer and would not let my gun close all the way without slamming it closed. But Remington primers worked great. I just got a new a barrel the pro in nickle . I like the looks of nickle and wanted a longer barrel. I just switched the sights over to my new barrel and shot it for the first time.
here is a photo of the first 4 shots out of my new barrel. I did not even have to adjust the sights. This group was at 70 yrds. not 100 . Best group from any gun I have ever had.
Take care-
Rob from Cache Valley Utah.

When I hunt with the smoke pole (TC Encore 50 cal)which is not very often anymore(bow mostly) I used the 150 grains Pyrodex with the 250 grain shock wave and it will lay the smack down on a deer... let me tell ya...that's how the deer in my avatar ended up where he is...lol

I love my New England Firearms .50 cal, Ive shot t/c, cva and traditions and always love my NEF, I use Hornady SST 250 gr rounds with 100 grains pyrodex, I hold a 1/2" group at 100 yards, and have 6 inches drop from 100 yards to 150 yards.

I own CVA, Thompson and Tradition muzzleloaders in flintlocks and my Traditions longrifle is a tack driver compared to the rest. I also own a Traditions Pursuit Pro inline and I have nothing bad to say about it.

I had a hawken I liked and have a firehawk now I like and I also have a contender with 3 barrels. I'd really like a triumph.

You're comparing apples to oranges.

Any percussion gun is going to be more user friendly than a flintlock, same as an inline is better than a sidelock, 209 primers are better than standard caps, etc.
