need education on releases

Postby Max » Sat Apr 19, 2008 5:27 pm

Okay my friends, educate me on releases.

I've always shot with my fingers but more and more people tell me I need a mechanical release. Here's my question:

Why?

Remember, unless it deals with shotguns, hunting dogs and bird hunting I'm totally in the dark about this. What I want to know is why use one and what kind to use (hand held, wrist wrap, etc...). What are the more popular ones out there. What do you swear by.

I have no problem changing the way I shoot (KwackWacker has totally re-written my book on deer hunting and great thanks to him for it) I just need the education from you guys.

I would suggest a caliper release. Probably a good name brand like scott. Atleast thats what I use. I have had the same release for 10 years now. The caliper release is probably the easiest one to switch to.

There is less interference with the string than using your fingers. Scoot is a good one. I use TruBall. I would do as Bambeklr suggested and get one with a wrist strap.

Have your pro-shop install a string loop so you dont wear out your serving and get a caliper release!! You will notice the difference in your groups.

Thanks for the help guys.

I went to both Scott and truball web sites and I'm a bit confused. The sites listed single caliper, double caliper, with and without NCS, RCS. Which do you guys suggest?

I suggest that you go to an archery shop and try some on to see what you like. When I started, I was going to get a Scott release but couldnt afford it at the time. I went with a TruBall and have found my brand of choice. I now have 2 of them and couldnt be happier. I have the Cyclone and the Short-N-Sweet 1.
