New .17HMR CAL

Postby derekpfeiffer » Tue Feb 08, 2005 11:02 am

I know this isn't directly related to deer hunting but most deer hunters are gun enthusists in general. I was just wondering what everyone thought of the new .17HMR rifles. When they first came out i vowed to never waste my money on one but after a year or two of everyone saying how much they loved them I decided to see for myself. I now own a Ruger 77/17 w/ target barrel and laminated stock and w/ a nikon scope and just love it I shoot it more than practically all the other guns I own. I can hold 3/8" groups at 50yds and just over 1/2" at 100yds. The only drawback of this firearm is the destruction is sometimes causes but w/ it's accuracy it's easy to make a head shot to avoid the carcass damage.

i have been looking for a new rifle, and that is one caliber i looked at. not necesarily that brand. i also looked at .22/250, but ended up by a new england arms single shot .204. i hope to shoot it this week sometime, maybe saturday. the .17hmr supposed to shot straighter than the .204, but i got a great deal on it.
Curiosity killed the cat, but I was a suspect for a while......

I have a marlin 17 cal. It is great. Very good small game and varment gun. I still use my 22-250 alot just because of the rang it carrys. I shoot my 17 at 150 and it is so deadly it should be illegal.

carnivore, I got plenty of private land to shoot these rifles. I have most of them because I hunt in maryland for whitetails and sika deer, I also hunt pennsylvania. I also go to south carolina every year to pig hunt. I try to go to virginia and hunt sika deer on the island of chincoteuge.
