If I were you I would use slugs. It is the law where I am that you can't use buckshot plus slugs will extend your range big time. Wheather or not you use a scope depends on you skills and the range you are going to shoot.

I found that a scope is better for tree stand hunting but if you are walking or driving and you have a quick shot than iron sights will give you a better chance at getting a shot off.

If you are hunting in thick cover where you won't be shooting more than 50-75 yards than Iron sights would work good but if you are going to reach out and touch something than a good scope is the way to go.

Mossberg has a good starter shotgun called the Mossberg 500. This is a great pump shotgun that comes with a rifled barrel and scope for slug hunting along with a smoothe bore barrel for bird hunting and buck shot if allowed. Depending on where you get it it might be around $250-$400 but it gives you the versitility to hunt multiple game.

I wouldn't worry about the barrel length unless you plan on hunting turkey and geese/ducks where you might what a longer barrel for range. I don't think it matters much for the slugs.

I just bought a single shot slug gun that has a short barrel and that thing shoots as good as my 30-06 riffle up to 200 yards.

Good luck. If it is brown put it down!

Slugs seem to prefer a shorter barrel. 20" is about right. Those NEF single shot slug guns are good guns.
