New Rifle and Scope

Postby Brock » Thu Dec 09, 2004 10:53 pm

Hey yall. I’m looking into buying a new rifle soon (pretty much for deer hunting only). I was wondering what yall would recommend. I can go up to about $1,000 (including scope). I was thinking of a .300 Win Mag. But I’m not really sure about which scope to buy. I would love to hear any suggestions yall might have concerning which rifle and/or scope I should get.

If I were going to buy a new one, and have only one, I'd buy a Winchester Model 70, 30.06. The range of bullet weights lets you shoot most anything you want in North America with plenty of power and less kick than the .300. Reloaders can stoke it to near .300 mag performance with some loads, or you can lighten them for young or small shooter. The old .06 is one of the most versatile calibers around.

I'll second that T-bird!
The only better choice he could possibly make...45-70. :D

I agree with you guys. My first deer rifle was a 30.06 and after a experimenting with many others, I always go back to it. :D

Best all round deer rifle

I've always liked the .270, but it's a 30.06 cartridge bored down to .27 caliber so with the same grain bullets muzzle velocity is almost identical and balistics are nearly identical to the 30-06.

The .270 has as much range of loads available but starting out a little lighter and ending a little lighter. I don't think you can go to 210 grain in the .270, but I know you can in the 30.06.

I don't think the 30/06 can go to 90 grain but I know you can in .270.

Over the counter in .270 you'll usually find 130 grain or 170 grain. 130 grain is awesome effective on deer and sighted for 100 yards puts you 1/2 inch high at 50 yards and 2 1/2 inch low at 300 yards. That's 3 inches variance out to a quarter of a mile. Look at a ruler and see how small that is.

I like to have one less thing to worry about and with the .270 I never consider range. If I see it I aim right at it and if I don't hit it, I know it was me and not the gun. The remington model 7600 or 7400 with synthetic stock is a real good deal at Walmart right now and you'll have all the money you care to spend left over for the scope of your choice.
My eyes focus forward like all predators so I know I was born to hunt.

depends on where you hunt if you need a brush gun ,i feel nothing beats the 45-70 marlin guide gun for longer range shooting the .308 (7.62 nato) is tops at 500 yards consistantly ,thats why the military uses it. For the 308 i would go with ruger as far as scope thats a personal preference issue.

 I would look at the 7mm Rem mag or one of the short magnums . I like the 7 mags much better than a 30-06.

new rifle

i think the choice is based on where you are hunting and plan to hunt. the 30-06 is a great all around cartridge. i personally use a .270 it has versatility and range plus a flat trajectory. i set my scope at 1 in. high at 100yds. that puts you dead on at 200yds. and no more than 2 in. low at 300yds. my opinion is a Remington mdl 700. it has great out of the box accuracy and you can buy it for $400 or less and have plenty of money to buy a good scope...say a Leupold (wink wink, nudge nudge). it also doesnt cost to much to have the barrel floated which adds to the accuracy. hope that helps some. anyway happy huntin

deer rifle

Postby nodoes123 » Thu Dec 23, 2004 10:49 am

i'm 13 years old and shoot a browning stainless staker 270 wsm.I bought it this year along with a NIKON PROSTAFF 3-9x40 scope for about a 1000 bucks. My dad and I have spent many a day at the range sighting our rifles in(he shoots and BAR 30-06) and we have killed more than ten deer together this year with our rifles.

If you get this rifle and scope you will be really happy
