i will give you a list of "good" bows. Mathews, Hoyt, PSE, Reflex, Browning, Alpine, Darton, Fred Bear, Martin, Pearson, AR, BowTech, the list goes on.
I would go to a place that had an archery pro shop and look at as many bow as you can. ask as many questions as you can too. get the best one that fits you and your wallet. not the one that is hyped up at the present. you can buy any bow you want and it will kill a deer. its not the bow its the hunter shooting it, the bow just provides a means for the kill. i was after a Hoyt and ended up with a Reflex. it was cheaper and is a great bow. i will let the rest of the bow hunting members answer you now. lol. good luck.

I would do like Doc suggest go to a archery shop get measured for proper draw length. look at and compare bows and prices but before you buy get on ebay and see what you can get get good used bow for. I bought my Martin and bowtech on ebay for way less than the shop and they were both year end clearance bows but there was camo pattern change so they got clearanced. Make sure that you get a bow with a large brace height to start as a beginner archer.

i just got a matthews switch back its smooth i went from a pse to this bow the pse was a good bow but the shop i got it from did not set it up right and when i shot the matthews i fell in love with it but i would shop a round and get the bow you like if you buy a bow just for the name and you dont like it you will then spend twice the money to go back and get the one you do like so just pick out the one you like no matter the price
