New to hunting

Hello everyone, I am new to hunting and live in the North East part of Indiana. I started just by taking my son out and want to give it a try. When is the best time to go out and hunt? I know they say morning and evening but the woods we are hunting is has scapes everywhere and all tore up buy deer and we only seen one deer so far. I figured we are out at the wrong time. Any sugestions. Thanks
