Postby doplgangerus » Mon Sep 27, 2004 6:55 am

I was wondering if anybody knows how many grains of powder is safe to shoot in a CVA Maghunter 50. cal inline. I'm new to muzzleloading and would appreciate any response. The instructions were fairly vaige about this point
Thanks

I'm not an in-line fan, might be able to help you out some though. What powder and bullet are you going to be using? Or they should help you out, I'm sure they've a website.

I shoot a Thompson Center Pine Ridge and I shoot those pyrodex pellets. I shoot 150 grains of powder with a sabot.

SDH's load is a good example of why I asked what powder. With replica powder that load may be the norm for pellets, don't try that 150grs. with 2f or 3f Swiss or Goex.

i dont have an inline, but some where in your paper work or on your barrel, should have the maxium load your barrel is rated for, if not then i would contact cva they do have a web sight and give them your model no and all to get the max load your barrel will take, be safe first and formost

another load

In my opinion your twist is the first factor to consider. My thompson Black Diamond has a 1-24" twist which is more suitable for sabots and pyrodex than say a 1-32" or a 1-34" twist out of the 1-24" twist i shoot a thompson mag 50 cal black sabot with a 240gr 44 cal pistol bullet with 90gr of pyrodex and can shoot a 3 " group approx. 1" high at 100 yds. if you have the 1-32 or 1-34" twist I would recommend the same bullet and sabot and start out with about 60gr of black powder ffg. My son shoots the same load that I do in his black night and he is steady enough that he cuts holes at the same distance as above. But thats one thing I love about shooting any muzzle loader is that you can work up a load that you'll swear by. I have a friend that shoots his knight with 200gr of pellets and a power belt bullet 300 yds in a 5" group but I've never put out the extra money to try anything and everything. Just practice with different loads and use the utmost amount of commen sense. OH YEAH ALWAYS PUT YOUR RAM ROD BACK IN ITS PROPER PLACE AFTER YOU SEAT YOUR BULLET. If you shoot your ram rod you'll get a big surprise.

If I tell the ram rod story you'll never allow me to carry a firearm on the target range as long as you live. or at least a muzzle loader in your presence.

here it goes

Postby carnivore » Thu Nov 25, 2004 9:26 pm

put a different scope on my b.p. gun and after about 5 or 6 shots and a few scope adjs. I swabbed the barrel w/a patch then adj. the scope again then reloaded and knocked an adj. cap off the bench with the ram rod still in the barrel I was searching around in the grass found the cap and put it un then set down at the bench and took real careful aim on a good set of bags because this was going to be the final shot and every thing was zeroed in when I squeezed off on that gun that son of a gun kicked like 10 powder charges were in that barrel the scope hit my brow and cut me and I couldn't figure out what the he## had just happened until I went down range to see where my bullet hit and there was a 1/4" hole in the plywood about 30" long and my brother was laughing his butt off the whole time because he shot a deer with his ram rod one time and when that gun kicked me like that he knew what i did but he wasn't gonna tell me until i looked at the target. There I said it now you better not laugh!

Mag on a muzzle loader means up to 150gr charge.

Carnivore....your not alone, I know 2 other people that shot there ram-rods down range. Yours truely did one better then that ..shot one out into a corn field off my front pourch with the gun held out in front of me, muzzle pointed up, just like you would hand someone a rifle with my arms fully extented. I was getting ready to check zero before deer season and thought I would fire-off a few caps to make sure the pee-hole was cleaned out......Put a patch on the jig pushed the ram rod down, was planning on firing a cap then checking my patch for a good dry burn and that gun went flying out of my arms. Scared the dickens out of me, I always put black tape over the muzzle of all loaded muzzle loader and to this day, I don't how I messed up, but it's good lession, I double check with a ram rod, before I fire-off a few cap to make sure things are dry.
Man did that have some recoil !

I can relate to firing a ramrod downrange.I done it too, with a fiberglass rod.Never did find all of it,but everyone at the range really enjoyed the show.Ever since then I make it a point to check and make sure I pulled the rod.But to be honest....twice I have done it.
