Postby chris lavoie » Fri Aug 27, 2010 11:22 pm

News Release from the Ontario Ministry Of Natural Resources, Aug. 27th. 2010. Natural attractants containing body parts of any member of the deer family including moose. It says possession and use of Deer urine and gland oils and other fluids, for the purpose of hunting is no longer permitted. It says Ontario is CWD free and feels this is one way to keep the disease out of Ontario.

Yeah.... I read that too. I dont think that MNR did enough research on this one before making a decision.

I can't say I'm opposed to either of these new regs.

It seems like a reasonable action to minimize the risk of CWD.

And the orage makes sense to me too, it won;t bother the deer any, but it may save your life.

Game farms are where the deer attractants (urine) are colected. Game farms, from what I understand, are possibly one of the sources of the disease. When a deer sniffs or licks the attractant (deer urine), they can ingest the protein into their system. If the commercial deer lure came from an affected deer, it will in turn be infected. So because of this I also agree with the new regulation!!

The only problem that I see is that the conservation officers are, as it is, overwhelmed with so many frivalous laws, that they won't have the time of day to do their jobs properly.

Chris.
I do agree with the banning of natural attractants to a certain degree what I dont agree with is the reasoning why MNR is looking to ban it and why. MNR has stated that it is banning it for the use of hunting...but it will still be available at outdoor stores for people wishing to attract wild deer for studies or photography or whatever else they wish. Therefore, not really helping the cause but making a circle around it for those of you who dont know this is common practice in Canadian politics...lol. Anyways the wanting of also ending game farming is not really going to solve or help the problem either, since farms are very distinct in their functions...if it is for collection of attractants then it should very closely controlled.

I think the reason they only banned the possesion and not the distribution is that it is an issue with that can be more readily addressed in Ontario though the Fish and Game Act. Banning manufacturer and production would be a whole other ball game.

I had a meeting with the office in dryden and this topic came up. They are allowing peaple to sell the lures because if travellers going to other destinations buy it, it's okay, just dont use it in Ontario. I think the MNR made a mistake in their wording of the new regs. This Idea of photography, or deer watching was an unexpected loophole they did not foresee. The people in Peterborough office never think the laws out before they pass them. I can give you MANY examples.
