Opinion on Mossberg combo shotgun?

Postby Monkeyleg » Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:48 pm

I haven't owned a Mossberg shotgun since the 500 I had in the 1980's. It was a good gun, and I had no complaints.

Now I'd like to get a deer gun, but still be able to bust some clays from time to time. I was thinking about a Mossberg combination package like this: http://www.gunshopfinder.com/mossberg/mossberg_45310.asp

My question is, are the Mossbergs today as good as they were 20+ years ago, or should I pay a bit more and go for Remington?

Thanks for any replies.

As good?Yes.Maybe better due better materials going into making them. You still get a solid, dependable shotgun with the Mossy 500.
Want my ammo?Ok,stand downrange.

Agreed. Mossberg has never lost their skill with making good shotguns.

I have to disagree LOL,,,imagine that,,,i have owned Model 500 and 835,,,and now own the 835 and Remington 870 Super Mag,,,there is no comparison between the two,,,Remington is the better shotgun mechanically, in particularly the feeding and ejecting the 3 1/2 in mags. The 835 has a nasty habit of failing to eject the spent shells,,my way of handling the situation is to feed 3 1/2,,,3,,,,3 1/2. The Remington has never had a problem whatsoever. In the model 500 it had a bad plug spring, after the tube was loaded to the max of 3 shots,,the spring would shrink and not push the rounds to the chamber,,would have to take the cap off and shove a wire down inside the tube to stretch the spring out. Best of luck for whatever you choose.

I dont even own a Remington shotgun anymore. The price's are too high and the workmanship started falling. I always hated the Mossbergs due to their finish and sloppy pumps and only owned them from trades etc and sent them packing quick, but, I bought a model 500 20ga for a loaner, squirrel gun and backup deer gun. You couldnt ask for a better gun. Theres higher quality guns ie:prettier guns out there if you want to spend some serious cash but if you want a no frills, no nonsense pull the trigger and bring home game gun then Mossberg will do. Winchester are right there with'em too and the H&R/ New England pumps and autos are good quality too.

I own that same Mossberg combo, and I have been very pleased with it. It has withstood rain and snow with no problem, it's very durable and you can't go wrong for the price.

I own the same combo but in Mossy Oak Camo and I love it. I have had no problems and I have bagged my fair share of both turkeys and deer with it. Would not trade it for the world.
